Sacrifice for Show

Bhagavad Gita 16.17

Meaning · English

Self-conceited and stubborn, swollen with wealth, pride and arrogance, they perform sacrifices in name only, for display, with no regard for the rules the scriptures lay down.

Three words carry the verse. Stabdha means stiff, like a post that will not bend: a person who cannot take correction. Mada is intoxication, the dizziness that money and standing give. Dambha is display, doing a good act so that it is seen. Krishna tells Arjuna that people of the demoniac type are full of self-regard, stubborn, and drunk on wealth and rank. They still perform sacrifices, but only in name. The outer form is there and the offering is missing. They do it ostentatiously, and without following the method the scriptures set down. The reason sits in the verses before it. Such people think, "I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give alms," as proof of their own greatness. The rite becomes an ornament for the ego, so it stops being an offering. The problem answered is how someone can look devout and still be on the downward path. Krishna's answer is that an act is judged by who does it and how, not by its outward shape. Shankara reads the display as worship staged for reputation. Ramanuja reads these as people who perform rites while turning away from the Lord. Madhva reads them as the demonic type whose rites lack right knowledge of the Lord.

A man donates a ceiling fan to a village hall, then stands beside it for the photograph, making sure the brass plate with his name faces the camera. The fan turns, but the gift was staged for the picture. The sacrifice done in name only works the same way: the form is present, and the giving has gone out of it.

1. Tonight, recall one good thing you did this week, such as helping someone, giving, or praying. Ask yourself honestly whether you wanted it noticed. 2. Tomorrow, do one small kindness that nobody will ever learn about. Do not mention it afterward, even casually. 3. Notice, for the next few minutes, whether the urge to tell someone comes up. Just notice it, and let it pass. 4. If you follow any rite or routine of worship, do it once slowly and fully, with attention on what it asks, not on how it looks.

A businessman stands at the opening of a new school hall he paid for. Before the ribbon is cut he asks the photographer to wait, because the plaque with his name is in shadow. A teacher is watching him and thinking about the children who will sit in that hall. The verse reads this moment plainly. The gift is real, and the building will stand. But Krishna describes a giver whose offering is for his own image, and who has grown stiff and unwilling to be corrected. Following the verse, he would first notice the pull toward the plaque. Then he would ask what the gift is for, and whether he is following the discipline of giving: giving without needing to be seen. He might let the plaque stay in shadow, or leave it off. Ordinary experience agrees that praise-seeking tends to leave the giver restless, because the gift is never finished until someone notices. The verse does not say the hall is worthless, and it does not promise that a quiet giver will feel no pull toward credit. It names the pull, which is the first step.
