Hating the Presence Within

Bhagavad Gita 16.18

Meaning · English

Wrapped in egotism, strength, arrogance, desire and anger, the demoniac abuse me, who dwell in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and they find fault with all that is mine.

Krishna names five coverings. Ahankara is egotism, the sense of 'I' swollen until it is the only thing in the room. Bala is strength, here the kind that is leaned on and flaunted. Darpa is arrogance, the feeling of being above others. Then desire and anger, which feed each other: wanting what one lacks, raging when it is refused. A person wrapped in all five, Krishna says, is called abhyasuyaka, one who finds fault and runs down others. Pradvishanto means they hate or abuse. Krishna tells Arjuna that this contempt lands on him, because he lives in every body, their own and other people's. They think they are insulting a rival or a stranger, but they are turning on the one who dwells in all. The reason he gives is the covering itself: egotism and anger leave no room to see anyone as sharing a single source. Shankara reads the hatred as aimed at the Lord who is the inner witness in every being. Ramanuja reads it as scorn for the Lord who rules all beings from within, shown in rejecting his commands. Madhva stresses that they deny his supremacy and fault his nature. The verse asks the listener to recognise these five coverings, first in himself.

A man in the dark is furious with the lamp in his neighbour's window, so he storms home and smashes the lamp in his own room too. The same light burned in both. The lamp is the one presence Krishna says lives in every body, and the smashing is contempt aimed at others that lands on oneself.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall one moment today when you spoke sharply or felt scorn for someone. 2. Ask which covering was on: pride in your own position, a wish for something, anger, or plain 'I' filling the room. Name it in one word. 3. Notice what that person looked like at the time: only an obstacle, or someone with a life as full as yours. 4. Tomorrow, when the same covering rises, pause for one breath before you answer.

A father stands at the roadside after a small collision. The other driver is shouting, and the father feels his chest tighten and his own voice sharpen. He has just been called careless, his pride is stung, and he wants the last word. Krishna's list fits the moment: ego bruised, a show of strength, a sense of being above the other man, then anger. Seen this way, the father can take one step at a time. First he names what has risen in him. Second, he recalls that the shouting man has a family waiting and a bad day of his own, and carries the same life Krishna says dwells in every body. Third, he speaks to him as a person. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who is tired, frightened or humiliated finds contempt easy and fairness hard. The teaching does not promise that the other driver will calm down, pay for the damage, or admit fault. It does not replace insurance, the police, or a doctor if anyone is hurt. It only changes what the father brings to the roadside.
