Hurled Back Again

Bhagavad Gita 16.19

Meaning · English

These hateful and cruel ones, the vilest of people in the world, inauspicious in all they do, I hurl again and again into demoniac wombs.

Krishna is describing the people he has just portrayed in the earlier verses, and he names them plainly: dvish, the hateful, and krura, the cruel. They are the nara-adhama, the lowest of humankind, which means those who have sunk below what a human being can be. The word that carries the weight is kship, to hurl or fling. Krishna says he hurls them, and ajasram says he does it again and again, without a break. The place they land is an asuri yoni. Yoni is a womb, a source of birth, and asuri means of the asuras, the demoniac. So hatred and cruelty bring a person back into births that suit those same qualities, and the next birth is where the pattern continues. Krishna gives the reason in the verses on either side: these people are driven by ego, anger, desire and contempt, and what they are driven by keeps carrying them. The verse also warns Arjuna, who is about to fight. It asks him to look at what hatred does to the one who holds it. Shankara reads the wombs as birth among fierce, harmful creatures. Ramanuja reads the hurling as God's response to their own deeds, so they are not punished at random. Madhva reads it as a long, hard fall for those fixed in hatred of God.

A cart wheel drops into a rut on a dirt road and the cart rattles on. Each pass cuts the rut deeper, until the wheel can hardly leave it. Hatred works the same way in the verse: each cruel act deepens the groove, and the next birth falls back into it.

1. Pick one irritation you feel often, such as a coworker, a relative or a driver. Tonight, write down in a single line the last harsh thing you thought or said about them. 2. Tomorrow, when that person comes to mind, wait ten slow breaths before you react, and notice where the heat sits in your body. 3. Say one plain, civil sentence to someone you usually answer sharply, and see whether the next sharp word comes a little less easily.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at midnight. His father's report is late, and a young nurse tells him it will be another hour. He feels the old heat rise, and the cutting sentence is already formed. Krishna tells Arjuna that hatred and cruelty are not passing moods. They carry a person on, birth after birth, into the same kind of life. Held against that, the man's moment changes in steps. First he sees the sentence as the next link in a chain, since a harsh word spoken once makes the second easier. Then he sees that the nurse is not the source of his fear. Then he lets the sentence go unsaid, asks politely whether someone can check on the report, and sits down. Ordinary experience confirms the first step: anger used often comes quicker. The verse's claim about wombs and rebirth is the text's own teaching, and it is stated here as such. It does not make the report arrive sooner or ease his fear for his father, and it does not replace the doctors who are caring for him.
