Freedom Opens the Path

Bhagavad Gita 16.22

Meaning · English

The person who is freed from these three gates to darkness, son of Kunti, works for the welfare of the soul. By that effort the person reaches the supreme goal.

Krishna turns from warning to promise. The three gates he means are the ones just named: lust, anger and greed. He calls them tamo-dvara, gates to darkness. Tamas is the dull, heavy quality that clouds sight, and dvara is a doorway you walk through. Then comes shreyas, meaning the lasting good, the welfare of the soul, as opposed to what only feels pleasant for an hour. Gati means a goal, a place one arrives at. Krishna tells Arjuna that once a person is released from these three, the work of caring for the soul becomes possible, and it carries the person to the supreme goal. The reason is simple. Lust, anger and greed keep pulling a person toward what damages him, so effort for his real good keeps getting overturned. Take away the pull and the same effort finally holds. Krishna asks Arjuna to see freedom as the start of a journey, not only an escape. Shankara reads the supreme goal as liberation, the knowing of the Self. Ramanuja reads it as reaching the Lord and serving him. Madhva also stresses reaching the Lord, whose grace he sees as the means of release.

A rowboat tied to the dock by three ropes can be rowed hard all afternoon and still sit in the same place. Untie the ropes and the same strokes carry it across the lake. The ropes are lust, anger and greed, and the rowing is effort for the soul's good.

1. Tonight, write down which of the three, wanting, anger or grabbing for more, tugged at you most today. 2. Pick one small moment tomorrow when it is likely to return, such as a sweet craving, a slow reply or a sale. 3. When it comes, pause for three breaths before acting on it. 4. Afterward, spend ten minutes on one thing that helps your inner good: a quiet walk, a prayer, or a kind word you owe someone.

A man stands at the kitchen door at eleven at night, phone in hand, ready to send his brother a furious message about an old money dispute. His pulse is up and the sentences are already written. The verse would slow him in steps. First he names what is driving him: anger, not a clear judgment. Second, he leaves the message unsent until morning, so the gate stays shut for one night. Third, with the heat lowered, he asks what he actually wants for his own good, perhaps peace with his brother, and does one small thing toward it. Ordinary experience confirms that a person acting in a rage seldom does what he would choose when calm. The limit is plain. Krishna does not promise the dispute will be settled, the brother will answer kindly, or the anger will not return tomorrow. Where anger comes with panic, long low mood or thoughts of harming oneself or others, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to see, and the verse does not replace one.
