Whim Over Guidance
Bhagavad Gita 16.23
Meaning · English
Whoever sets aside the instructions of the scriptures and acts on the push of desire reaches neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the highest goal.
Three words carry the verse. Shastra-vidhi is the scriptures' guidance: shastra is a teaching handed down, vidhi is a rule or method. Kama-karata means acting from the impulse of desire, where kama is craving and karata is doing. Siddhi is perfection, the success of a life well accomplished. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person who drops the guidance and simply follows what he feels like doing gets three losses. He does not reach siddhi. He does not find sukha, which is happiness. He does not reach the highest goal, the param gati. The reason lies in the verses before: desire, anger and greed are called gates to ruin, and a person led by desire alone is walking through them with no map. Desire shows what is wanted now; it cannot show where it leads. The verse asks Arjuna to notice what is steering him. Shankara reads shastra here as the Vedic teaching on right and wrong action. Ramanuja stresses that the loss is the highest goal, liberation, and not only worldly success. Madhva takes the failure as a lack of true knowledge of the Lord, which guidance would have given.
A traveler in a strange city puts away the map because a street looks pleasant, then takes every turn that catches his eye. The evening finds him tired, far from the station, and without his lodging. The map is the guidance, the pleasant street is desire, and the missed lodging is the three losses.
1. Tomorrow, pick one choice you would normally make on impulse, such as a purchase, a snack, a reply, or a scroll through your phone. 2. Before acting, wait ten minutes and ask what a teaching you trust, or a wise elder, would say about it. 3. In the evening, write one line: did the wait change the choice, and how did you feel afterward?
A man stands in a shop at closing time, holding a phone he cannot afford. The salesman is smiling, the price can be split into small payments, and he wants it badly. Krishna's teaching asks for one pause before the purchase. In that pause he sets the want beside what he already knows: the rent, the loan, the advice his father gave him about borrowing. He sees that the want is real but is only one voice in the room. He may still buy it, or he may leave and come back in a week. Either way the choice is made with guidance in view, not under the push alone. Ordinary experience confirms that a strong want in the moment makes the later cost look small. The verse does not promise that guidance removes the want, that following it will bring comfort at once, or that it replaces a doctor or an adviser when money, health or debt have become a real trouble.
