Brothers, wives, parents and friends fall apart. Over a mere coin, a trifle, they are all made enemies at once. Over a little money they grow furious, their anger blazing. Eager to win, they drop one another quickly, and they kill, giving up in a moment the warmth they once shared.

The Avanti brahmin, in Krishna's retelling, is looking back at what money did to the people around him. Three words carry the verse. Kakini is the smallest coin, a few cowries' worth, so the verse is about the least amount, not a fortune. Sauhrida means friendship, literally a good heart; it is the warmth between kin and friends. Sprdhah means those who are eager to win, grabbing for their share. Now the clauses. Brothers, wives, parents and friends come apart. They are tender with one another, and a trifle makes every one of them an enemy at once. Over a little money they are worked up, their anger lit. Each is eager to win, so each drops the other quickly and may even kill, throwing off the old goodwill without a thought. Sridhara Svami reads the point as how slight the cause is next to the loss. The brahmin says this after counting the harms wealth brought him in 11.23.14 and 11.23.17. His reason is plain: he has seen that bonds he trusted could not hold against a small quarrel over money. The verse asks the listener to see how thin that bond can be when money is at stake, and to hold their own claims loosely.

A tight knot in a rope looks firm, yet it holds only while the rope is under an even pull. Let one strand be tugged hard against the others and the whole thing slips loose. Family and friendship are that knot, and a small dispute over money is the sudden hard tug.

1. Think of one small money matter pending with a relative or friend: a loan, a share, a bill. 2. Today, settle it or name it kindly, in person or by phone, before it grows. 3. While you talk, notice when your voice tightens, and slow down at that point. 4. If you owe something small, pay it today without being asked.

A man sits at his late father's table with his two brothers, a bank passbook between them, and the eldest says the smallest sum aloud: whose it was, who paid for what. Voices rise, and old kindnesses are forgotten in a minute. The verse speaks to that moment. It would first name what is happening: a trifle is being asked to carry the weight of a lifetime together. Then it would let him ask what he is grabbing, and what he is dropping to grab it. Ordinary experience bears this out: people in a money quarrel often say things they cannot unsay, and the quarrel outlasts the money. Practical steps help too, such as writing down who is owed what, or asking a neutral relative or a lawyer to sit in. The verse does not say the money does not matter, nor that a fair claim should be abandoned. It also does not mend a rift that has already happened. It offers the brahmin's sight, that the cost to kinship is usually larger than the sum.
