He gave no share to the sages and gods, to the ancestors and living beings, to his kin and relatives, and none even to himself. Guarding his money like a yaksha guarding treasure, he falls downward. Heedless, he spent his money, his years and his strength on useless striving. Skilled people reach their aims by these very things. Now that I am old, what can I accomplish?

The Avanti brahmin speaks here, in Krishna's retelling to Uddhava. Three words carry the verse. Asamvibhajya means not sharing out, from the root bhaj, to take part or give a portion. He divided his earnings with no one, not the sages, gods, ancestors, beings or relatives, and not even himself. Yakshavitta means wealth held the way a yaksha holds a hoard. A yaksha is the legendary guardian of treasure, who watches it and never enjoys it. Pramatta means heedless, from mad, to be dazed or careless. He was not wicked in a dramatic way. He was asleep to what the money was for. The first half says what such a person gets: he falls downward. The second half is the brahmin counting what he lost. Money, years and strength were all poured into pointless effort, and these are the very means by which skilled people reach what matters. Then comes a plain question: now that he is old, what can he do with them? He asks it without drama. Youth and strength do not come back to be spent again. The reason it is told is that he is working out why he lost everything, and the answer lies in how he spent himself, not in bad luck. The text offers it as his hard-won clarity, and Krishna passes it to Uddhava.

A man spends the whole harvest season locking grain into a cellar and checking the lock. When winter comes he is too weak to dig it out, and the neighbours he never fed are not at his door. The grain is money, the lock is his guarding, and the winter is old age.

1. Tonight, take two minutes and write down where this week's money and hours went. Mark each one that fed someone: family, a neighbour, a duty, or yourself. 2. Choose one small share to give tomorrow: a phone call to an elder, a meal carried to someone, a few coins to someone who needs them. 3. Do one useful thing with today's strength that you keep putting off. Walk, learn, or mend something. Notice how it feels to use it.

A man of seventy-one stands at the foot of a long flight of temple steps. His knees will not take them. His family goes up without him, and he thinks of the trips he never took them on because there was always one more deal to close. Now the question in the brahmin's mouth is his own: what can I do with this body now? The verse would change the moment in small steps. He would first name the loss without arguing with it: those years went into guarding, not living. Then he would ask what is still in reach. He can sit at the foot of the steps and talk with a grandchild who stays with him. He can give time today. He can stop piling up what he will not use. Ordinary experience confirms that strength and stamina do thin with age, and some things are easier to start when young. The verse does not give back the years, mend the knees or erase regret. A sore joint still deserves a doctor's look.
