Why Strain for Wealth

Meaning · English
Why does a wise man wear himself out again and again, chasing wealth to no purpose? Surely this world is deeply bewildered by someone's illusion. What good are riches, or those who hand out riches? What good are desires, or those who grant desires? What good are rites, or the ones who give new births, to a man already being devoured by death?
Three words carry the verse. Maya is the power that bewilders: from ma, to measure, it is what makes things look other than they are. Mrityu is death, and the verse uses a plain picture for it: it is already eating the person. Dhanada and kamada mean givers of wealth and givers of wishes, the gods and powers people pray to for money and pleasure. The Avanti brahmin, in Krishna's retelling, asks a question first. Why should a man who knows better keep straining after money that serves nothing? He answers himself: the whole world seems to be under someone's spell. The commentators take that someone to be the Lord, whose maya keeps people chasing. Then he asks the same thing three ways. What can wealth do, or the givers of wealth? What can desires do, or the granters of desires? What can rites do, even the ones that earn another birth? Each is asked of a person death is already consuming. He says this because he has lost everything and is deciding what to do with the time left. Krishna tells it to Uddhava as a mind coming clear. The verse asks the listener to look at the chasing itself, and at how little of it answers the one thing that cannot be avoided.
A man bails water out of a boat with a teacup, then stops to buy a nicer teacup, then a bigger one, all while the hull is cracked and the water keeps rising. Wealth, wishes and rites are the better teacups. Death is the crack nobody is mending.
1. Tonight, before sleep, think of one thing you have been chasing this month: money, a purchase, a promotion. 2. Ask it plainly: if my days were short, would this still matter? Sit with the answer for two minutes. 3. Tomorrow, give the same chase one hour less of your effort, and spend that hour on a person or a duty you have been postponing. 4. Notice, without judging, how the chase feels once its hour is smaller.
A man in his fifties sits in a hospital corridor while his brother lies in intensive care. Without thinking, he opens his banking app and checks his balance, then a property listing. He has been doing this for years, in every gap. The brahmin's question would change that moment in small steps. He would notice the thumb reaching for the phone. He would see that the chasing is a habit and not a plan. He would ask what the balance can do for the man behind that door, and the honest answer is very little. Then he might put the phone down and go sit by the bed, which is the one thing within reach. Ordinary experience agrees that a hospital corridor shows what actually matters faster than any argument. The text's own claim goes further: Krishna's brahmin says death is already consuming everyone, and that is its teaching, not something to test here. The limit is plain. The verse does not say money is unneeded, since bills and treatment cost real money. It does not lessen the fear or the grief of that corridor, and it is no substitute for the doctors inside.
