Bridge Kept, Rope Untied

Meaning · English
He guards the bridge of right living, closes wrong roads, loosens the rope of deeds, gives true ease, pervades all. Golden serpent coils adorn him. I worship Kalabhairava, Kashi's lord.
Right order is a bridge, the way people cross life without falling, and he keeps it standing. The paths of wrongdoing he breaks up so they lead nowhere. Our own actions form a rope that binds us to their results, and he unties it. What he gives in its place is real ease, a settled happiness, not a passing thrill. He reaches everywhere. His limbs are circled by a golden serpent, worn like a gleaming cord.
Picture a switchman at a busy rail junction. He keeps the main line clear, and he sets the points so no train drifts onto the old spur that ends in weeds and a drop. That is the first half of the verse: he holds open the way of right living and shuts off the ways of wrong.
