Meaning · English
I worship Kalabhairava, lord of Kashi. His feet shine in jewelled sandals. Eternal, one without a second, the chosen god, spotless, he breaks death's pride; his fearsome fangs set free.
The hymn starts at his feet, glowing with jewelled sandals, then names what he is. Eternal: he does not begin or end. Without a second: nothing stands beside him as a rival. The chosen god: the one a worshipper sets their heart on. Spotless: nothing clings to him. Then come two phrases about death. He breaks death's pride, its confidence that it always wins. And the fangs that look so frightening are the very thing that sets people free.
A mother cat lifts her kitten by the scruff of its neck, teeth closed around it, and carries it out of danger. To a stranger it looks like an attack. The kitten goes limp and safe. Bhairava's fangs work the same way: the mouth that frightens onlookers is the mouth that carries his own out of death's reach.
