Their hearts were tied together by tenderness, and Vishnu's power of illusion held them both spellbound. Troubled in mind, the two fed their young. One day the pair went out to find food for them, and for a long while they searched all through that forest, hungry for grain. A fowler, wandering the woods by chance, saw the young birds moving about near their home. He spread his net and caught them. The pigeon and his mate, always anxious to provide for their brood, gathered food and came back to their nest.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what happened on the day the net came down. Three words carry it. Sneha is tenderness, originally the word for oil or stickiness: love that clings. Maya is the power by which Vishnu veils what is plainly in front of us. Dina-dhi means a troubled, narrowed mind. The text says the pair are bound by sneha and bewildered by maya, and the commentators take the clinging itself as part of that veil. Then the story. Both parents leave the nest to find food. They search the forest a long time. A fowler passing by chance sees the fledglings moving near the nest, spreads his net, and takes them. Nothing the parents did was cruel or careless in the ordinary sense. They went to feed their children. The parents then fly home with food in their beaks, not knowing what waits. The avadhuta draws the lesson from the whole story. Love that grips so hard that all attention goes into providing leaves no room to see danger or to see the limits of what one can protect. He is not mocking the birds. He asks what a mind does when it is too tied to look up.

A mother hurries to the market with her whole mind on the shopping list, and at home the pot on the stove boils dry. Her care was real, and her attention was all pointed one way. The birds are her: devoted, busy, and blind to what was happening behind them.

1. Today, pick one person you look after and notice, once, when your mind is fully fixed on providing for them. 2. Stop for one minute at that moment. Look up and around: what else is happening in the room or the day? 3. Ask yourself quietly: what can I actually keep safe, and what is beyond me? 4. Go on caring as before, and note whether anything felt lighter.

A mother stands at the kitchen window at dusk, watching her teenage son cycle off to a late match. She has packed his bag, checked his lights, reminded him twice about the road. Still her chest tightens until she sees him turn the corner. Her love is entirely ordinary, and so is the tightness. The story would change that moment in small steps. First, it names the tightness as love gripping, not as failure. Second, it shows that the birds were not wrong to feed their young; their trouble was that feeding was all they could see. So she can do what is hers to do: the lights, the reminder, the bag. Then she can let the rest go out of her hands for the evening, instead of keeping watch with her whole body. Ordinary experience confirms that a worried mind narrows, and a narrowed mind notices less. The story does not promise that the road will be safe, or that worry never comes. It says nothing about what to do if a child is in real danger, where help should be sought at once.
