Attention to the Seed

Shiva Sutras 3.15

Meaning · English

Attention is to be held on the seed, steadily, again and again.

Three words carry this teaching. Bija is the seed, the small thing from which a whole plant comes. Avadhana is attention, from a root that means to place something down and let it rest. Shakti is the power of Shiva. Shiva is the name for the one reality that shows itself as everything. Bhaskara's Varttika says the seed is the supreme Shakti, the cause of the whole world. It is not an object inside the world. The attention is the mind placed there, and placed again each time it slips, and placed with care. Why does Shiva teach this here? The sutra before it says the same awareness holds in one place as in another. Once that is granted, the practitioner needs somewhere to return to. The seed is that place. The sutra belongs to the anava way. This is the path of effort, where a person works with something close at hand: the seat, the breath, the senses. Those are the doorways. This sutra names what the mind is brought back to once it has come in by any of them. Bhaskara adds that a yogi who keeps this attention is a great yogi. The commentators agree the weight falls on the repeating. One placing is not enough. The practice is the returning.

On a dark street, a child keeps looking back to the one lit window of her house. Her eyes wander to cars and shop signs, and each time they find the window again. The window is the seed, and the looking back is the attention.

1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as sitting down with tea or waiting for a kettle. Stay still for five minutes. 2. Let your attention rest on the breath at the nostrils, or on the weight of your body in the seat. 3. When the mind drifts, notice that it has drifted. Place it back gently, without scolding. 4. Count nothing and expect nothing. Only notice how many times you came back.
