Settled, Then the Plunge

Shiva Sutras 3.16

Meaning · English

One established in the seat sinks easily into the lake.

Four words carry the sutra. Asana is the seat, from the root as, to sit: a place where one rests. Sukham is ease, with no strain in it. Hrada is a lake, deep and still water. Nimajjati comes from majj, to sink, with ni, down: to go under completely. The one who abides in the seat sinks into the lake at ease. Nothing is climbed or pulled. Once settled, he goes down the way a body goes into still water. The sutras just before speak of carrying the same awareness into everything and of holding to the seed. This one shows the resting place from which that becomes natural. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of small means, where a person begins with what is already at hand: a place to sit, the breath, the senses. Bhaskara reads the seat as the power of Shakti, Shiva's own power, in which one rests as one with it. He adds that the yogi drops the labour of meditation and fixed concentration and plunges into the lake of his own delight. The commentators take the lake to be awareness itself, and the sinking to be no task.

1. Choose a seat you can stay in without shifting, and settle into it until the body stops asking for changes. 2. Let the breath and the senses be as they are. Do not manage them. 3. Let yourself sink, as into still water, with no effort to reach anything. 4. When the mind wanders, note it and sink again from where you are. 5. When the ease is gone and only strain remains, stop and rise slowly.
