Shiva Sutras 3.17

Meaning · English

By his own measure, he brings a making about.

Three words carry it. Matra is a measure, a unit, a portion; it comes from a root meaning to measure. Sva is one's own. Nirmana is making, shaping, and it comes from the same root: to make is to lay out measures. So svamatra is the portion of consciousness a person takes to be himself, the measure of caitanya that shows up as one who knows and something known. Apadayati means he brings it about, he carries it through. Read plainly, the sutra says the yogi brings forth a making by his own measure. Nothing outside supplies the material. The sutra stands in the anava way, the way that works through the small self: the seat, the breath, the senses. Having been told to hold the seed, sit at ease and sink into the lake, the student learns what that practice shows. The shaped world he meets is laid out by the same awareness he sinks into. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, takes the sutra to say that the yogi, at one with consciousness, fashions forms from his own nature alone. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that for such a yogi the world is seen as made, and that he is no longer bound to rebirth.

A spider draws its web out of its own body. No thread is brought in from outside, and the web is laid out to the spider's own reach. In the same way, the world a person meets is spun out of the measure of his own awareness.

1. Sit for five minutes today, in the same chair or spot, and follow the breath going in and out. 2. When a sound reaches you, stop and notice that it is known in you, in the moment you hear it. 3. Later, look at one ordinary thing, a cup or a window, and notice the seeing as well as the thing seen. 4. Do not try to make anything happen. Only notice where the knowing takes place.
