Three Kinds of Appetite
Bhagavad Gita 17.7
Meaning · English
The food that is dear to each person is also of three kinds. So are sacrifice, austerity and charity. Hear now the distinctions among them.
Krishna opens a new line of teaching with a simple claim: what a person finds dear comes in three kinds. Three words carry it. Ahara is food, literally what is taken in, which can include more than the plate. Priya is dear, what the heart leans toward before the mind has argued. Tri-vidha is threefold, three kinds or grades. Krishna begins with food because everyone eats and everyone has a taste. Then he adds yajna, sacrifice or offering, tapas, austerity or disciplined effort, and dana, giving. Each has three kinds as well. The reason runs back to the verses before. Arjuna has just heard that people who torment themselves out of ego are mistaken, and he needs a way to tell kinds of conduct apart. Krishna gives him one: look at what people reach for, since those choices show what is working inside them. The listener is asked only to hear the distinctions, bhedam, the differences, with care. Shankara reads the line as an announcement that a classification follows. Ramanuja ties the preferences to the three modes that shape each person's nature. Madhva likewise takes the kinds as grades that show in what a person chooses.
A grocer who has kept the same shop for thirty years can tell a good deal about a customer from the basket alone, before a word is said. Food, giving, effort and worship work like that basket: what a person reaches for is a quiet portrait of the state they are in.
1. At your next three meals, pause for a breath before eating and name what you reached for first. 2. Ask once, without scolding yourself, whether hunger, habit, hurry or low mood chose it. 3. This week, notice one act of giving and one task you worked hard at. Ask what each was really for: peace, show, or the other person. 4. Write the answers in a line or two. Only notice the pattern.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while her father is in surgery. She has eaten nothing since morning. At the vending machine she buys the sweetest, saltiest thing on the shelf and finishes it without tasting it. The verse would have her notice the choice itself. Was it hunger, or fear looking for something to do? Then she can decide whether to also drink water or find something plain and steady. Ordinary experience confirms that worry, tiredness and a broken day pull appetite toward quick comfort. Regular, simple meals and enough water help a body cope with long strain, and a family doctor would say the same. The old teaching goes further: it holds that what a person finds dear belongs to three kinds, and it reads character in them. That is the text's own teaching, and the verse offers it as a way to look at oneself. In that corridor, it does not make the surgery safer, quiet the fear or replace the surgeon. It only turns one small choice into something noticed.
