Meaning · English
Foods that increase life, vitality, strength, health, happiness and satisfaction, that are juicy, succulent, nourishing and pleasing to the heart, are dear to those established in goodness.
Krishna now describes the food that people in the mode of goodness are drawn to. Sattva, the key word, means goodness, clarity, a settled and lucid state of mind. Ayus is life span, and bala is strength. Arogya is freedom from disease, and sukha and priti are happiness and a quiet satisfaction. The first half of the verse lists what such food does: it adds to length of life, to strength, to health, and to contentment. The second half says how it feels: rasya, juicy, with real flavour; snigdha, succulent or lightly oily; sthira, lasting, so that it nourishes the body over time; and hridya, pleasing to the heart. The last clause is the hinge. These foods are dear to the sattvic person. Krishna describes what such a person likes, not a rule laid on everyone. The reason he gives comes from the previous verses: everyone has a preferred food, and the preference shows which mode a person lives in. Taste follows nature. The listener is asked to notice what they reach for and what it leaves behind. Shankara and Ramanuja both read the verse as a description of sattvic food, tied to the later teaching on how food shapes the mind and body. Madhva keeps the same sense and stresses that these foods suit those whose nature is already good.
A well-tended kitchen garden in late summer: ripe tomatoes, soft greens, and a pot of warm dal on the stove. Nobody has to be persuaded to want it, and everyone feels better after eating. That is the food of goodness: it pleases at the table and keeps pleasing hours later.
1. At your next meal, eat the first five bites slowly, without a screen, and notice the flavour. 2. Two hours later, check how you feel: light or heavy, steady or restless, clear or dull. 3. Do this for three meals this week and note which one left you best off. 4. Cook or choose that kind of meal once more, simply because you liked what it did.
A bus driver finishes a long route near midnight and stops at a stall. He wants the greasy, salty snack he always buys, and he eats it fast, standing up. An hour later he feels heavy and sleepy while he still has a drive home. Krishna's description would change that moment in small steps. First, he would notice that the choice follows habit and tiredness, not hunger. Second, he would ask what the food leaves behind in an hour, not only how it tastes now. Third, he might pick the warm, plain meal that sits well and lets him drive clear. Today's family doctor would agree that whole, fresh, moderately prepared food supports steady energy, digestion and long-term health, and that heavy, very salty meals late at night often leave people sluggish. The old terms for life span and strength do not map neatly onto any single nutrient, and the verse names no particular food. It does not promise a long life or cure illness, and it is no substitute for medical advice where someone has a condition or special dietary needs.
