Food of the Restless

Bhagavad Gita 17.9

Meaning · English

Foods that are bitter, sour, salty, very hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. They produce pain, grief and disease.

Three words carry the verse. Rajasa belongs to rajas, passion, the restless quality that reaches for more and wants it now. Ishta means dear: what a person wants and chooses, not what happens to be served. Pradah means those that hand out, and what these foods hand out is pain, grief and disease. The list is a list of excess. Bitter, sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry, burning: Shankara reads the word for 'very' as running through every item, so the target is the too-much, not the flavours themselves. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person ruled by rajas loves such food, then names the cost in three stages. Duhkha is pain, felt while eating or soon after. Shoka is the grief or regret that follows. Amaya is lasting illness. Shankara reads them in just that order: pain at the time, sorrow after, disease in the end. Ramanuja takes the verse as part of the teaching that food feeds the mind as well as the body. Madhva reads the liking itself as a sign of what a person is made of. Krishna's reason is the sorting he began earlier. Each quality has its own taste, and its taste shows where it leads. The verse asks the listener to notice that a craving for fierce food belongs to a restless nature, and that the pleasure arrives with its bill attached.

A cook turns the flame to its highest because it feels faster. The oil spits, the edges blacken, the kitchen fills with smoke, and a hand gets burned reaching in. The meal is ready sooner and costs more. The restless appetite works the same way: it wants the strongest heat now, and the pain comes after.

1. At one meal today, before the first bite, stop for ten seconds and ask whether you are hurried or restless, and whether you are reaching for something sharp, salty or burning because of it. 2. Eat what you choose, slowly, and notice how it sits. 3. An hour or two later, note how your stomach, thirst and mood feel. 4. That evening, write one line about what you noticed. Repeat for three days.

A long-haul truck driver pulls into a roadside dhaba at two in the morning, eyes stinging, still hours from home. He orders the hottest, saltiest plate on the menu and a third glass of sweet tea. It feels like what he needs. The verse would slow that moment in steps. First, it names the pull: he is tired and hurried, and the hurry is choosing for him. Second, it points ahead: the burning in his chest at the next stretch of road, the thirst, the heavy, short-tempered morning. Third, it leaves the choice with him, perhaps the same plate with less chilli and salt, and water beside it. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint. Today's nutrition agrees that a great deal of salt and very hot, spicy food can bring heartburn and an upset stomach, though many people eat chilli without trouble and bitter or sour foods in ordinary amounts are simply food. The three qualities and their link to grief belong to the text's own teaching and have no modern counterpart to translate them. The verse does not promise that careful eating removes illness or sorrow, and it does not replace a doctor for chest pain or a stomach that keeps burning.
