Offered Because It Is Right
Bhagavad Gita 17.11
Meaning · English
The sacrifice performed as the scriptures direct, by those who expect no reward, with the mind settled in the conviction that it ought to be offered, is of the nature of goodness.
Three ideas carry the sentence. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made as an act of worship. Phala means fruit, the result a person hopes to get back. Vidhi means the prescribed method, the way the scriptures lay the offering out. Krishna tells Arjuna that an offering is sattvika, of the nature of goodness, when three things are present. It is done by people who want nothing in return. It follows the prescribed way. And the mind is made firm in one conviction: this ought to be offered. The reason is that the offering is judged by what drives it, not only by what is done. If the driver is hunger for a reward, the same act becomes something lesser, as the next verses show. Krishna asks Arjuna to see that a right act has its own warrant. It does not need payment to justify it. Following the method keeps the act from being shaped by whim. Conviction means the person acts because it is right, not because they are bargaining. Shankara reads the firm mind as the sense of duty itself, an act done because it is owed. Ramanuja takes such an offering as worship given to the Lord. Madhva likewise reads it as service to Vishnu, with no wish for gain.
Think of someone who sweeps the shared stairwell every morning, a task nobody assigned and nobody thanks. They sweep because stairs get dirty and a clean stair is simply right. That is the offering Krishna describes: done in the proper way, asking for no return, and settled in the plain conviction that it ought to be done.
1. Pick one small duty nobody sees, such as wiping a shared counter, watering a neighbor's plant, or calling an elderly relative. 2. Do it today in its usual proper way, without shortcuts. 3. Before you start, say quietly to yourself, 'This ought to be done.' Do not mention it to anyone afterward. 4. At night, notice whether you wanted thanks while you worked, and how the act felt without it.
A woman sits through the night beside a sick neighbor whose family lives far away. Nobody will know, and nobody will repay her. Around three in the morning she is tired and begins to ask what she is getting out of it. The verse changes that moment in steps. First she sets the question of reward aside. Then she does what the situation properly asks: the water, the medicine on time, the quiet. Then she settles on one plain thought, that this ought to be done, and the bargaining stops. Ordinary experience bears out that work done for its own sake is easier to keep up when no thanks arrive. The limit is plain. Krishna's teaching does not make the night shorter or the neighbor well, and it does not replace a doctor when one is needed. It speaks only to the spirit in which the sitting is done. It also does not say she will feel no tiredness.
