Meaning · English
But the sacrifice that is performed with an eye on the reward, and also simply for display, O best of the Bharatas, know that offering to be of the nature of passion.
Three words carry it. Yajna is sacrifice, an offering made with care and intention. Phala is fruit, the result one hopes to get. Dambha is pride, the wish to be seen and admired. Krishna tells Arjuna that an offering can be flawless in form and still be rajasic, a word for the mode of passion, the restless pull of wanting. He names two motives that put it there. One is aiming at a reward: the offering becomes a payment, made to get something back. The other is display: the offering becomes a stage, made so others will notice. He says also, so the two often travel together. The reason is the problem the whole chapter keeps returning to: the same act can belong to different natures depending on what drives it. The previous verse showed the calm kind, done because it is right. This one shows its opposite, where wanting has entered the act. What it asks of the listener is honesty about motive, since the act alone does not show which kind it is. Shankara and Ramanuja both read the two motives, reward and pride, as what lowers the rite. Madhva stresses that the offering is meant for the Lord, so it is spoiled when turned toward self.
A man hands out sweets at a street corner while holding up his phone to film it, checking the screen between each one. The sweets are real, but the giving has turned into a show. The offering is the sweets; the filming is the pride and the reward.
1. Pick one kind act you will do today, such as helping a neighbour or giving food to someone. 2. Before you begin, ask yourself quietly: what do I hope to get from this, thanks, praise, a favour back? 3. Do the act once without telling anyone about it, not even later in conversation. 4. That evening, notice for a minute whether the wish to be seen came up, and how strong it was. Just notice it.
A woman has just finished organising a large community meal. As the guests leave, she catches herself scanning for who noticed, who thanked her, and whether the committee head saw her work. The meal went well, yet she feels oddly flat. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in small steps. She would first see that two wishes were riding along with the work: to be repaid and to be seen. Naming them takes away some of their grip. Then she could ask what the meal itself accomplished, the people who ate and went home fed, and let that be the whole result. Ordinary experience confirms that an act done for applause leaves us hungry for the next round of it, while an act done for its own sake can end when it ends. The verse does not promise that praise will stop mattering, or that she will feel no pang if she is overlooked. It does not say her work is worthless if some pride mixed in. It only names the mixture honestly. The old idea of the three modes has no direct modern equivalent, so it is best taken as the text's own way of sorting motives.
