The Hollow Offering
Bhagavad Gita 17.13
Meaning · English
A sacrifice done against scriptural direction, with no food shared out, no sacred hymns chanted, no gifts to the priests, and no faith behind it, is to be considered one of ignorance.
Krishna is sorting sacrifices by their quality, and this is the lowest of three kinds. Three words carry it. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made in a set ritual. Shraddha means faith, a trust that the act is worth doing. Tamasa means of tamas, the quality of dullness, heaviness and ignorance. Krishna lists what the lowest kind lacks: the rule (vidhi) that tells how to perform it, food shared with others afterward, the hymns, payment to the priests who conducted it, and faith. Take all five away and what remains is a performance with nobody fed, nobody honored, and nobody inside it. He gives this as his teaching on why a rite can be done and still count for nothing: it is done blindly, carelessly or stingily. The earlier verses set the contrast. The best rite is done by the rule, for its own sake, without hunger for reward. This one is its opposite. It asks the listener to look at how they offer, as well as what they offer. Shankara reads the verse as completing the three-fold sorting begun in the verses before it. Ramanuja ties the sorting to the performer's faith and to whether the scripture is followed. Madhva reads the lowest kind as the sort that darkens the one who performs it.
A cook lights the stove and sets a pot on it, but there is no recipe, nothing goes into the pot, and nobody is called to eat. The motions of cooking happen, yet no meal exists. The rite stripped of rule, sharing, gifts and faith is that empty pot.
1. Choose one small offering you already make: a prayer, a lamp, a meal grace, a gift to someone. 2. Before it, take ten seconds to say why you are doing it. 3. Do it by whatever rule or custom you know, not half-remembered. 4. Share something afterward, even a bite of food, and pay promptly anyone who helped. 5. Notice if your mind was in the act or elsewhere.
A man stands at the anniversary rite for his father. The priest is rushed, the man is reading messages, and the guests leave without being fed. Afterward he feels nothing, and wonders why. Krishna's list gives him a way to look. Was there a plan for how the rite would go? Was food shared? Was the priest paid fairly and thanked? Was his mind, even briefly, on his father? Each is a small repair he can make next year, or tomorrow with a simple meal for a neighbor in his father's name. Ordinary experience confirms that a gesture done with half a mind leaves little behind. The limit is plain: doing the rite well does not lift grief or bring the father back. It only lets the mourner know he honored him in earnest, and it does not stand in for the support of family or, where grief becomes heavy, a doctor.
