Discipline of the Body

Bhagavad Gita 17.14

Meaning · English

Honoring the Supreme Lord, the twice-born, the spiritual master and the elders; cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and non-violence: these are declared to be the austerity of the body.

Tapas means heat, and so effort that burns away what is slack. Krishna tells Arjuna that austerity is not only fasting or hardship. It begins with how the body behaves. Pujana is honoring: bowing, rising, serving. The ones honored are the Lord, the twice-born (the learned Brahmins), the guru and the elders. Shaucha is cleanliness, of body and surroundings. Arjava means straightness: a person who acts the same inside and out. Brahmacharya is conduct held in restraint, and here it means celibacy. Ahimsa is not causing harm. Krishna is dividing austerity into three fields: body, speech and mind. The body comes first because it is where intention becomes deed. Respect, order, honesty and gentleness are austerity because each one holds back a lazy or harmful impulse. The listener is asked to see ordinary conduct as real discipline. Shankara reads brahmacharya as strict continence and ahimsa as not injuring any creature through the body. Ramanuja takes the honored ones as worshipped in relation to the Supreme. Madhva also reads the whole list as service to Vishnu.

A lantern with a sooty glass gives a dim, brownish light even when the flame is good. Wiping the glass does not make the flame, but it lets the flame show. Cleanliness, respect and gentleness in the body's conduct work the same way: they keep the glass clear.

1. Tomorrow morning, greet one elder in your home or street by standing up and giving full attention for a minute, phone put away. 2. Before one meal, wash your hands and clear the space where you eat. Notice how it changes your pace. 3. Today, once, do a plain task exactly as you would if watched: no shortcut, no small lie to yourself. 4. In the evening, recall one moment you nearly raised a hand or your voice, and note what held you back.

A granddaughter visits her grandfather in a care home after a long day. She is tired, her phone buzzes, and he repeats a story for the third time. Her shoulders tighten and she wants to leave. The verse would turn this into a few bodily acts. She stands when he enters, washes her hands, sits at his level, and keeps her voice level and her hands still. She does not tell him a polite untruth about being busy. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so small fixed habits carry her when feeling does not. Handwashing and clean surroundings are plainly good health sense. Doctors give no single rule on celibacy, and treat it as a personal and religious choice, not a medical requirement. The text teaches it as part of bodily discipline. The verse does not promise that the old man will remember her, that his illness will ease, or that her tiredness will lift. It asks only that her conduct stay honoring and clean.
