Meaning · English

Words that cause no distress, that are truthful, kind and beneficial, together with the steady recitation of the scriptures: these are declared to be the austerity of speech.

Krishna tells Arjuna that speech can be a discipline, as real as fasting or standing in the sun. He names four marks. The words cause no distress, which is anudvega: no agitation, no jolt left in the listener. They are truthful, satya. They are priya, pleasing or kind, and hita, beneficial, meaning they actually do the listener good. A sweet lie fails the test of truth; a bitter fact thrown like a stone fails the test of gentleness. All must be held together. Then he adds one more: regular recitation of the scriptures, abhyasa, which means repeated practice. Tapas, austerity, comes from a root for heat: a discipline that burns off what is rough. Krishna's reason is that speech is the part of us most often let loose without thought, so restraining and shaping it is real work. The recitation gives the tongue a worthy habit to fall back on. Shankara reads the whole as the training of speech itself. Ramanuja stresses that truth must also serve the listener's good. Madhva takes the recitation as study done under a teacher's guidance. What the verse asks is care before speaking: is it true, is it kind, will it help, and will it leave the other person calm.

A potter wets her hands before touching spinning clay. Dry hands tear it; wet, steady hands shape a bowl. Speech works the same way: the same true fact can tear someone open or be shaped into something they can hold and use.

1. Choose one conversation today, perhaps at a meal or on a phone call, and pause for one breath before each reply. 2. Before you say something hard, ask three quick questions: is it true, is it kind, will it help? 3. If one answer is no, say less, or say it later. 4. Tonight, read aloud for five minutes from a text you love, and notice how your voice slows.

A father stands at the school gate after his daughter's poor result. He is frightened for her and annoyed. The sentence ready on his tongue is true: you did not study enough. Krishna's four marks slow him down. He asks whether it will help, and sees that said now it will only sting. He waits until they are walking home, asks how she felt in the exam, and then names the one thing she can change. The truth is kept; the injury is not. Ordinary experience agrees that harsh words said in anger are often regretted, while the same message said calmly is more likely to be heard. The verse does not promise that she will not cry, or that gentle words will fix a failed exam. It also gives no rule for the rare moment when a person must be told something that will upset them whatever the wording. There, it asks only that the cruelty be left out.
