Quiet Mind Austerity

Bhagavad Gita 17.16

Meaning · English

Serenity of thought, gentleness, silence, self-control, and purity of purpose: these are declared to be the austerity of the mind.

Krishna has described austerity of the body and of speech. Now he turns to the mind, where both begin. He names five things. Prasada means clarity or calm, like water that has settled and turned clear. Saumyatva is gentleness, a softness in how one holds other people in thought. Mauna is silence, which here reaches past the lips to the mind's own chatter. Vinigraha means holding back or reining in, so self-control is the steady hand on the reins. Bhava-samshuddhi is purity of purpose: the inner motive is cleaned until nothing crooked sits under the action. Krishna calls all five tapas, a word for deliberate effort that burns away what is unneeded. The reason is plain from the sequence. A body that behaves and a tongue that speaks kindly still wear a mask if the mind behind them is restless or scheming. So the effort is moved inward. He asks Arjuna to treat the mind as ground that needs work. Shankara reads mauna as the discipline of contemplative reflection, not mere speechlessness. Ramanuja ties these qualities to a mind prepared for knowing the self. Madhva stresses that they are practised with devotion to the Lord.

A glass of muddy water left on a table. Nothing is added or removed, yet the silt slowly sinks and the water clears. The mind works the same way: calm, gentleness and honest purpose are what remain when the stirring stops and the sediment settles.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no phone and no task, and watch where your thoughts run without chasing them. 2. Tomorrow, before a conversation you expect to be difficult, pause for one breath and decide to think of the other person gently. 3. Once today, notice a motive behind something you are about to do, and ask whether it is the real one. 4. Keep one hour this week without commenting aloud or inwardly on others, and note how it feels.

A father stands outside an exam hall, watching the gate where his daughter will walk out. His mind races through marks, fees, what the neighbours will say. He has a sharp remark ready if she looks careless. The verse would change this in steps. First he lets the noise settle, which is the serenity. Then he picks the gentler way of holding her in mind, whatever the paper held. He stops rehearsing the speech, which is silence of the mind. He restrains the first reaction, and he asks what he actually wants: her good, not his pride. When she comes out, his face is open and his first words are a question about how she is. Ordinary experience confirms that a hurried, anxious mind speaks harshly and regrets it. The limit is real: none of this promises a good result, or removes his worry, or makes the paper easier. It only shapes what he brings to the moment.
