Austerity Without Reward
Bhagavad Gita 17.17
Meaning · English
This threefold austerity, practiced with supreme faith by people who are steadfast and do not yearn for any reward, is called austerity in the mode of goodness.
Three words carry this. Tapas comes from a root meaning heat. It is discipline that burns away what is loose, the way fire works on metal. Shraddha is faith, a trust placed in the heart, and Krishna calls it supreme, meaning aimed at something higher than comfort or gain. Aphala-akanksha splits into phala, fruit, and akanksha, longing. It describes someone who does not wait for the fruit. Sattvika means belonging to sattva, the quality of clarity and goodness. The plain sense is that the disciplines of speech and mind Krishna has just listed turn clear and good when two things are present. The person trusts what they are doing, and does not demand payment for it. Steadfast, or yukta, means joined and steadied, not pulled about by results. Krishna gives this as a test of quality. Two people can do the same austerity and differ completely, because what rises in them differs. The verses after this show the other kinds, driven by display or by self-harm. Shankara reads the steadiness as a collected, balanced mind. Ramanuja reads the faith and the giving up of reward as service offered to the Lord. Madhva also takes the practice as worship of God.
A small lamp burns on a windowsill every evening. It is lit the same whether anyone walks past or the street is empty. Nobody applauds it, and it does not dim for lack of notice. The sattvic austerity is that lamp: faith keeps it lit, and the missing audience changes nothing.
1. Choose one small discipline already within your reach today, such as speaking only kindly at one meal, or ten quiet minutes without your phone. 2. Do it without telling anyone. 3. When a thought arrives asking what you will get from it, notice it and go on with the task. 4. At night, take one minute to ask whether you did it with trust or with an eye on payment. Just notice the answer.
Meena has spoken gently to her sharp-tongued father-in-law every morning for nine days. On the tenth he still grunts and turns the page of his newspaper. She feels the old pull: why bother, nothing is coming back. The verse works step by step here. First it separates the practice from the answer. Her gentle speech was the discipline, and his grunt was never part of it. Second, it asks where the effort comes from. If it comes from trust that this is the right way to speak in her own house, the missing thanks leaves it standing. If it was a purchase, it collapses on the tenth day. Third, it keeps her attention on the next sentence she will say, which is the only part she controls. Ordinary experience agrees that effort tied to praise tends to fade when praise stops. The verse does not promise that her father-in-law will soften, or that the sting of being ignored will vanish. It does not replace a frank conversation if the household needs one.
