Penance Staged for Applause
Bhagavad Gita 17.18

Meaning · English
Austerity performed with ostentation, for the sake of respect, honor and adoration, is said in this world to be in the mode of passion. It is flickering and temporary.
Three words carry it. Tapas is austerity, from a root meaning heat: a discipline that burns away laziness. Dambha is ostentation, practice done for show. Rajasa is the quality of passion, the restless pull of wanting. Krishna tells Arjuna that the same discipline can be pure or not depending on why it is done. When it is done for satkara (respect), mana (honor) and puja (adoration), it belongs to passion. Shankara explains these as being called a good ascetic, being greeted with deference, and being worshipped. The cost is in the last two words. Chala means flickering, shaky, like a flame in a draught. Adhruva means not fixed, not lasting. Krishna gives the reason in the words themselves. The reward is other people's attention, and attention moves on. The fruit is gone before the discipline has changed anything inside. Ramanuja reads the three kinds of austerity as sorted by the quality behind them, and this one as aimed at the practitioner's standing rather than at God. Madhva takes its results to be passing and not the lasting good. Krishna asks Arjuna to look at the motive behind effort.
A sparkler on a festival night. It throws bright light, children gather, everyone watches. In seconds the wire is cold and black in the hand. Austerity done for applause burns the same way: it is bright while eyes are on it, and it leaves nothing once the crowd looks elsewhere.
1. Pick one small discipline you already keep, such as a fast, an early walk, or a prayer. 2. Today, keep it completely unmentioned. No telling, no posting, no hinting. 3. Notice the moment you want someone to know. Note how strong the pull is, and let it pass without acting. 4. At night, ask which felt steadier: the doing, or the wish to be seen doing it.
A retired schoolteacher is on the third day of a fast. A neighbor drops by, and within a minute he hears himself say, almost casually, that he has not eaten since Monday. He feels a small warm glow, then a flat emptiness once the neighbor leaves. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna's teaching is that the glow comes from respect, honor and adoration, and that it flickers and does not last. Step by step: he first notices the urge to mention it. He sees that the praise lasted less time than the hunger. He then asks what the fast was for in the first place, and keeps it quietly, or changes it. Ordinary experience agrees that praise fades fast and needs refreshing. The verse does not say that being seen is wrong, and it does not make the fast easier. Anyone with a health condition should still ask a doctor before fasting.
