Hurting Yourself, Hurting Others
Bhagavad Gita 17.19
Meaning · English
Discipline carried out through a confused, stubborn grip, by tormenting oneself, or aimed at ruining another person, is described as belonging to ignorance.
Krishna is sorting tapas, which means heat, effort, self-discipline, into three kinds. This is the third, tamas, the mode of ignorance, which is dullness and clouded seeing. Two words carry the verse. Mudha means bewildered, a mind that has lost its bearings. Graha means a grip, so mudha-graha is a stubborn clutching at a wrong idea. The pain-giving effort comes from that grip, and the discipline is torture of one's own self. The verse names two forms. In the first, a person hurts their own body or mind and calls it spiritual strength. In the second, the effort is aimed at destroying someone else. Krishna's reason is that the discipline has stopped serving any clear purpose. The earlier two kinds were at least aimed at something, whether faith or recognition. Here the harm is itself the point, and nothing is gained by it. He asks Arjuna to look at why an effort is made and whether the person can see clearly. Hardship alone does not make an effort good. The commentators read it in their own ways. Shankara takes the confused grip as a lack of discernment. Ramanuja takes the verse as describing practices cut off from right knowledge. Madhva is read as stressing the harm to others as the mark of this ignorance. Every clause stands: the grip, the self-torture, the wish to harm, and the verdict.
Picture a man gripping a rope so tightly that it burns his palms, though no one asked him to hold it and nothing hangs from it. The clenched hand is the stubborn grip. The raw skin is the self-torture. Pulling the rope to knock someone else over is the wish to harm. The strain is real, but it carries nothing anywhere.
1. Today, pick one hard thing you are putting yourself through, such as a strict fast, a punishing schedule or a vow of silence with someone. 2. Sit for five minutes and write one line: why am I doing this? 3. Notice whether the answer mentions pain as proof, or mentions someone you want to defeat or shame. 4. If it does, loosen the practice slightly for one day and watch whether anything of value is lost.
A man in his forties has missed his sister's wedding invitations for years after a quarrel. This morning he skips breakfast and lunch, sleeps four hours and runs until his knees ache. He tells himself it is discipline, but he is picturing her seeing how little he needs her. The verse speaks to him at that moment. Krishna's first step is to separate effort from the grip behind it. The effort here is clenched around a hurt and is shaped by it. The second step is to see the two targets named: his own body, which pays, and his sister, whom he hopes to wound by showing it. The third is to ask what he would still do if nobody ever heard of it. A fast kept for health, or a run kept for strength, passes that question easily. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, underfed body makes anger louder and judgment worse. The verse does not promise that the quarrel mends, that the hurt fades, or that a person in real distress can reason their way out alone. For that, a doctor or counsellor is the right door.
