The Gift Given Rightly

Bhagavad Gita 17.20

Meaning · English

A gift given because it is right to give, to one who can give nothing back, in the proper place, at the proper time, and to a worthy person: that charity is said to be in the mode of goodness.

Three terms carry this teaching. Dana is giving, a gift let go of. Patra is the person who receives; the word also means a vessel, something that holds what is poured into it. Sattvika means in the mode of goodness, the quality of clarity and steadiness. Krishna tells Arjuna that a gift is sattvika when it is given because giving is a duty, with no thought of being repaid. The person receiving cannot return it. The place suits the gift, the time suits the need, and the receiver is truly fit to be helped. Every clause matters. The giver's inner reason comes first: the gift is given because it ought to be. Then come the outer conditions, where, when and to whom. The reason Krishna gives is the one running through this chapter: the same act can be good, restless or dark depending on the mind behind it. Verse 17.21 and 17.22 then show the two lower kinds. What it asks of the listener is to look at motive and judgment together. Among the commentators, Shankara reads the worthy person as one fit through learning and conduct. Ramanuja stresses that such giving is done as a duty with no eye on fruit. Madhva is not quoted on this point here.

Think of a well-dug channel carrying water to a dry field in the right season. The water asks nothing from the field. It reaches the roots when the crop is thirsty. The giver is the water, the right place, time and person are the channel, and the gift is only good when it arrives where it can be used.

1. Choose one person this week who cannot repay you: a neighbour, a cleaner, someone elderly nearby. 2. Ask yourself what they actually need now, and when they need it, before you decide what to give. 3. Give it quietly, with no mention of it afterwards, and say nothing to anyone else. 4. That evening, notice whether you were waiting for thanks, and write down the answer in one line.

A woman leaves a bag of groceries outside the door of an older neighbour whose husband died last month. She knows the neighbour is proud and would refuse thanks. She thinks of a card or a message so the neighbour will know who it was, then decides to leave it unsigned. The verse works step by step here. First, the reason: she gives because it is right, not for a return. Second, the person: this neighbour cannot easily give back, and that is no objection. Third, the timing: the first weeks after a death, when cooking stops, is when food helps most. Fourth, the place: at the door, without a scene. Ordinary experience confirms that a gift timed to a real need lands better than a larger gift that arrives late. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise the neighbour will be less grieved, or that the giver will feel nothing like resentment if no thanks come. It also does not replace a doctor or a counsellor if the neighbour needs one.
