Therefore the expounders of the Vedas, always uttering Om, begin their acts of sacrifice, charity and penance, just as the scriptural injunctions prescribe.

Krishna tells Arjuna how people who know the Vedas actually start their work. A few words carry it. Yajna is sacrifice, an act offered up. Dana is giving. Tapas is penance, a deliberate discipline, from a root meaning heat. Vidhana is a prescribed rule, the settled manner of doing a thing. The plain sense is that the brahma-vadins, those who speak about Brahman, open every sacrifice, gift and austerity by uttering Om. They do it by the scripture's rules, and they do it always, not now and then. The opening word 'therefore' points back to the previous verse, where Om is named as the first symbol of the Absolute Truth. Because Om stands for that Truth, an act begun with it is placed under that Truth before it starts. The problem it answers is the one the earlier verses raised: a gift can be given at the wrong time, to the wrong person, with contempt. An act needs a fixed beginning that says what it is for. Krishna asks for a steady habit of starting rightly, by rule, every time. Shankara reads the brahma-vadins as expounders of the Veda and the rules as the scripture's own. Ramanuja takes Om as a name of the Supreme, so each act begins with that name. Madhva likewise treats Om as the Lord's name, so the act begins in remembrance of him.

A singer sits down and tunes the tanpura before the first line. The tuning is not the song, but every note afterward is measured against it. Om at the start of a rite works like that drone: the sacrifice, gift or austerity that follows is set against the Truth it is offered to.

1. Choose one task today that you usually rush into, such as the first work of the morning or a meal you cook for others. 2. Before you begin, stop for ten seconds, stand or sit still, and say quietly one short word or phrase that is sacred to you. Om will do if it is yours. 3. Begin the task straight after. 4. Repeat this at the same moment for the rest of the week. Notice whether the first minutes of the work feel different from before.

A mason arrives at a building site on Monday morning. The wall is half done, his back aches, and the first brick feels like a chore. Krishna's teaching gives him a small step before the trowel moves. He stops, says the word he keeps for such moments, and remembers whom the wall is for and what it is meant to be. Then he lays the first brick. Nothing about the wall has changed, but the work has a beginning of its own and does not drift in from the previous day's tiredness. Ordinary experience bears this out: a marked start steadies what follows, while work taken up half-awake tends to stay half-awake. In the Gita's teaching the word does more than steady the mind, because it places the act under the Truth Om names, and that claim is the text's own. It does not promise that the work will go well, that the ache will lift, or that the result will be what he hoped. It gives the act a clear opening and a stated purpose, and the rest is still labour.
