Meaning · English

The learned understand the giving up of actions done from desire as renunciation of actions. The wise declare that letting go of the fruits of all actions is the renunciation of the desire to enjoy them.

Arjuna asked for two things to be told apart, and Krishna now gives each its own definition. Three words carry it. Karma is action, anything done. Phala is fruit, what the action returns: pay, praise, a result. Kamya means done out of desire, action taken up to get something. The first half says the learned call it sannyasa, renunciation of actions, when a person gives up kamya karma, the deeds done only to gain a wanted end. The second half says the wise call it tyaga when a person lets go of the fruit of all actions, not just the desire-driven ones. So the first is narrower: it drops a certain kind of act. The second is wider: every act continues to be done, while the claim on its outcome is set down. Krishna answers a confusion in Arjuna, who is weighing whether to stop acting altogether. The definition shows that the weight lies in the wanting, not in the work. The listener is asked to see where the grip actually is. Shankara reads the first term as setting aside rites done for a desired result. Ramanuja takes both terms to mean that duty goes on while desire for its fruit is dropped. Madhva stresses that this letting go is an offering of the action to God.

A man posts a letter and walks away. Posting is the part that belongs to him. If he stood at the box all week waiting for the reply, the letter would travel no faster, and his week would be lost. Action is the posting; the fruit is the reply; tyaga is leaving the box once the letter has gone in.

1. Pick one task you will do today, such as cooking a meal, answering a message or sweeping a floor. 2. Before starting, say quietly what result you are hoping for: thanks, a good mark, a clean look. 3. Do the task with attention on the doing itself, for as long as it takes. 4. When it is finished, notice whether you reach for the reward. Do not scold yourself if you do. Just note it, and let the task stand as done.

A tailor is finishing a bride's blouse the night before the wedding. His mind is on whether the family will pay in full, whether they will praise it, whether the neighbours will notice his name. His hands slow down and a seam goes crooked. The verse would change this in steps. He sees that the stitching is his and the payment and praise are not. He puts the question of reward aside for the night and gives the needle his whole attention. The seam is unpicked and sewn straight. Krishna's teaching here is that the work continues, only the claim on the outcome is set down. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy with the verdict does the task worse. The verse does not promise that the family will pay, that the wedding will go well, or that he will feel no worry about his rent. It does not replace a conversation about money he is owed, and it does not cure anxiety that has grown beyond a passing worry. Where that worry is heavy and constant, a doctor is the right person to see.
