Scholars Disagree on Action
Bhagavad Gita 18.3
Meaning · English
Some of the learned declare that action should be given up as an evil. Others say that acts of sacrifice, charity and penance should never be abandoned.
Three words carry this. Karma is action, anything done on purpose. Tyajya means what should be given up. Dosha means a fault, a stain, so dosha-vat is 'as a fault'. Krishna reports a disagreement among the learned. Some call action itself a fault, because doing binds the doer, so the clean course is to stop. Others hold that three kinds of act are never to be dropped: yajna, offering; dana, giving; and tapas, disciplined effort. Krishna gives both views and does not choose between them yet. The reason is Arjuna's question in 18.1. He stands on a battlefield wondering whether to withdraw from action altogether, and he has been handed two respectable answers. Krishna sets them side by side so the next verses can sort them out. What this asks of the listener is to notice that the question is rarely 'act or not act' but 'which acts, and in what spirit'. The commentators read the two camps differently. Shankara takes the first as those who think all action binds. Ramanuja takes both views as partial truths that Krishna will correct by keeping duty and dropping attachment. Madhva likewise keeps these duties as service to the Lord.
A man burns his hand on the stove. One neighbour says to throw the stove out. Another says a household never stops cooking. Both have seen the burn, and they disagree about the cause. One blames the fire, the other thinks only the grip needs changing, and the quarrel is over which is right.
1. Tonight, pick one duty you have been resenting, such as a weekly call to a relative or a chore at home. 2. Write one sentence for dropping it and one for keeping it. Two lines only. 3. Do that duty once this week, slowly, for ten minutes or less. 4. Afterwards, notice where the weight sat: in the task itself, or in how you were carrying it.
A woman has cooked a free midday meal for her street's old people for six years. Tonight she is flat with tiredness. A friend tells her to stop, since it only drains her. Her sister says a promise like that is never broken. Both sound right, and she cannot sleep. Krishna's report of the learned splitting into two camps names this exact fork. It lets her see that two sensible people can look at the same work and say opposite things. The next step is to ask which part of the work is the fault. The cooking, the feeding and the giving may be fine, while the grip of pride, fear of what neighbours will say, or the habit of doing everything alone may be what hurts. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness makes every duty look like a burden. The verse does not say which camp is right, does not take away her exhaustion, and does not replace rest or a doctor if the tiredness is more than a bad week.
