Acts That Purify
Bhagavad Gita 18.5
Meaning · English
Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance should never be abandoned; they must certainly be performed. Sacrifice, charity and penance are indeed the purifiers of the wise.
Three words carry this. Yajna is sacrifice: an offering made for something beyond oneself, in the Gita's world the ritual fire and, by extension, work done as an offering. Dana is giving, letting something of yours pass to someone who needs it. Tapas is penance, literally heat: a chosen discipline that costs some comfort. Then pavana, purifying, and manishin, the thoughtful or wise. Krishna is settling an argument raised just before: some learned people say all action should be dropped. For these three he says no. They are never to be given up, and the sentence repeats itself to be sure, saying they must certainly be done. His reason is that they purify, and they purify even the wise. Being wise does not put a person beyond needing them. They are how the mind stays clean. Shankara reads them as cleansing the mind, preparing it for knowledge. Ramanuja reads them as duties that even a seeker of liberation keeps doing, with the longing for reward set aside. Madhva reads them as acts of worship offered to God, and so purifying. All three agree that the acts stay.
A fine cook finishes the meal and still scours the pot. Skill does not excuse her from it, because the next meal depends on a clean pot. Sacrifice, giving and discipline are that scouring: even a wise mind gathers a film each day, and these acts wipe it off.
1. Choose one small act of giving for today: a meal shared, a coin, ten minutes of real help to someone. 2. Choose one small discipline that costs a little comfort, such as walking instead of riding, or leaving the phone in another room for an hour. 3. Do both without announcing them or waiting for thanks. 4. In the evening, take one minute to notice whether your mind feels lighter or heavier than it did this morning.
Ravi is fifty-eight and it is Saturday morning. For weeks he has felt flat, and the neighbourhood food drive he helps with suddenly seems pointless. He is tempted to stay home until his mood improves. The verse would change that moment in small steps. First, the question stops being whether he feels like going and becomes whether the act is worth keeping. Krishna tells Arjuna that giving, offering and discipline are not for the days when one feels inspired. They are what keeps the mind clean. So Ravi goes, carries boxes, hands them over, and is tired in an honest way by noon. Ordinary experience bears this out: steady, useful work for others often steadies the person doing it. The verse does not promise that his flatness will lift by evening, and it does not remove grief or loss. If the heaviness lasts for weeks, as it has for Ravi, a doctor is the right person to see, and the food drive does not replace that visit.
