The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18 · What Letting Go Means
Quitting Out of Fear
Bhagavad Gita 18.8
Meaning · English
Calling a duty troublesome, and giving it up out of fear of bodily discomfort, a person acts from passion in that renunciation. Having done so, they never gain the result that true renunciation brings.
Three words carry this. Karma is action, here the work that falls to a person through role and responsibility. Kleshа is discomfort: the ache, strain and tiredness of the body. Rajasa is the quality of passion, restless and bent on comfort and craving. Krishna describes someone who looks at a duty, labels it troublesome, and drops it because the body will suffer and they are afraid of that. They call this renunciation. Krishna says it comes from passion, from wanting ease, and that such a person never reaches what real renunciation gives. The reason sits in the verses around it. Tyaga, renunciation, means letting go of the craving for the fruits of action, not leaving the action. When the work is abandoned out of fear, the craving for comfort is untouched. It has only found a new object, so nothing was actually let go. Krishna asks Arjuna to see the difference between releasing desire and running from effort. Shankara reads the fruit as the freedom that comes with knowledge, which this escape never earns. Ramanuja reads duties as service offered to God, so quitting them from fear is leaving that service. Madhva likewise keeps duty as an offering to Vishnu, so abandoning it forfeits what the offering brings.
A man stands at the edge of a pool in the early morning, dips a toe, decides the water is too cold, and goes home dry. He tells himself he has given up swimming. He has only avoided a shiver. The pool is the duty, the cold is the bodily discomfort, and going home is the false renunciation.
1. Pick one chore or duty you have been putting off because it will be tiring or unpleasant. Write down in a few words what exactly you fear about it. 2. Ask whether the fear is of real harm or only of discomfort. If it is real harm, such as pain that signals injury, rest or ask a doctor. 3. If it is only discomfort, do ten minutes of the task today, at a set time, and stop when the ten minutes end. 4. Afterwards, notice how the dread compared with the actual effort.
Meena, fifty-eight, is a week out from knee surgery. Her physiotherapy exercises hurt. This morning she sits on the bed with the sheet of exercises and thinks, this is too much, I will skip today and begin tomorrow. The relief of that thought is real, and so is the fear under it. The verse would change the moment in small steps. First, she would name what is happening: the exercises have been labelled troublesome, and the label is doing the deciding. Second, she would ask the question the verse leaves open: is this the ache of effort, or a warning of harm? That is a question for her physiotherapist, and a phone call is better than a guess. Third, if it is only effort, she would do a smaller portion rather than none. Ordinary experience bears this out: skipping brings quick relief, and the dread of the next session grows. The verse does not promise the exercises will stop hurting, and it does not ask anyone to push through pain that a doctor would want to hear about.
