Duty Without Clinging
Bhagavad Gita 18.9
Meaning · English
An obligatory action done simply because it ought to be done, giving up attachment and the longing for its reward, Arjuna: that renunciation is held to be sattvic, in the mode of goodness.
Three ideas carry this teaching. Karma niyatam means a fixed, obligatory action: the work that belongs to your place in life, the thing that is yours to do. Sanga means attachment, a clinging to the doing, to being the doer, to how it turns out. Phala means fruit, the reward or result. Krishna tells Arjuna that renunciation of the sattvic kind does not drop the work. The work is done, and done as a duty, because it is to be done. What is dropped is the clinging and the craving for the fruit. Both go, and the action stays. The reason follows from the two verses before it. Krishna has just called abandoning duty out of delusion tamasic, and abandoning it out of fear of bodily trouble rajasic. Here he gives the third case, where nothing is abandoned except the grip. This answers Arjuna's problem on the field: he wants to flee the fight to keep his hands clean. Krishna says the cleanness lies in how the act is held. He asks Arjuna to ask of each task whether it is his to do, then do it without bargaining for the outcome. Shankara reads this tyaga as giving up the sense of ownership over action. Ramanuja reads it as duty offered in service to the Lord. Madhva also reads it as work done for the Lord's pleasure, not for gain.
A man carries water to his neighbour's field each dawn because the well is on his side of the hill and the field is dry. He does not wait to be thanked or count the crop. He carries the buckets and goes home. The buckets are the duty, the thanks and the harvest are the fruit he sets down on the path.
1. Tonight, pick one small task that is yours and that you usually put off or resent: dishes, a phone call, a form. 2. Before starting, say quietly, "This is mine to do." Do not ask what you will get from it. 3. Do it fully, for as long as it takes, and notice any urge to be praised or to be done. 4. When finished, leave the task behind without replaying it. Note how that felt.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor at night after a long day, about to start the third round of her father's care chores: medicines, forms, a call to her brother who has not helped. She keeps counting who owes her thanks. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First she asks only whether this is hers to do, and the answer is yes. Then she does the task itself, the pills sorted and the form filled, and sets aside the running tally of thanks and fairness. The tally is the attachment he names, and the work is lighter without it. Ordinary experience bears this out: resentment adds weight to a task without doing any of it. The teaching does not say her father will recover, that her brother will change, or that she will feel no tiredness or grief. It also does not replace rest, or the doctor's advice about her father's illness. It speaks only to how she holds the work in her hands tonight.
