Meaning · English

The body as the seat, the doer, the senses of many kinds, the many separate efforts, and Providence as the fifth: these, Krishna says, are the causes at work in every deed.

Krishna names the five parts of any deed one by one. Adhishthana is the seat or base, here the body, where the deed happens. Karta is the doer, the soul that takes itself to be the one acting. Karana means instrument, the senses of many kinds through which the doer sees, hears, grasps and moves. Cheshta is effort, and Krishna calls the efforts many and distinct: each push, each attempt, each small movement is its own thing. Daivam is Providence, the part that no one in the deed controls. It comes last, as the fifth. The reason comes from the verses before it. Krishna has just said that the fruits of action cling to people who are attached to them. So he lays out how a deed is actually made, and the doer turns out to be one of five. The listener is asked to see the whole set, not only himself. The commentators read the fifth differently. Shankara takes daivam as the presiding powers that work through the senses. Ramanuja takes it as the Supreme Person within, who rules the other four. Madhva takes it as the Lord, who is the chief cause behind them all.

A farmer sows a field. The field is the body. The farmer is the doer. His hands and plough are the senses, and the long days of work are the efforts. Whether the rain comes is Providence. Each of the five is needed for the harvest, and he commands only some of them.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you did today that went well or badly: a meal cooked, a talk with someone, a task finished. 2. On paper, write five short lines: the state of your body, you as the one who chose, the tools and senses you used, the separate efforts you made, and what was out of your hands. 3. Look at the fifth line for a minute. Notice how much of the outcome sits there, and whether your feeling about the day changes.

A man sits in his car outside the building where he has just had a job interview. His hands are still tight on the wheel. He replays one answer and tells himself that if he had said it differently, the job would be his. Krishna's list pulls that thought apart. He slept badly, and that was the body. He chose to apply, and that was the doer. His ears, voice and eyes carried the conversation. He prepared for days, and each piece of preparation was a separate effort. Who else applied, who the panel already liked, and what the company needed that week were never his to decide. That fifth cause is what the text calls Providence. Ordinary experience confirms the first of these: a tired body weakens judgement and speech. Seeing all five does not make him care less about the interview. It shrinks the single answer he is blaming to its real size. It does not promise the job, and it does not take away the sting if he is turned down.
