Meaning · English

So the householder, his mind never at rest, takes his pleasure in pairs of opposites, like a bird in the net. Poor man, he feeds his family, and with all his kin he sinks. Whoever gains this human world, whose door to freedom stands open, and still clings to home like a bird to its nest, the wise say has climbed high and fallen.

Three words carry the verse. Kutumbi is the family man, from kutumba, the household one is bound to feed and protect. Dvandva is the pair of opposites, pleasure and pain, gain and loss, from dvi, two. Mukti-dvara is the door of freedom, mukti being release, from muc, to let go. The avadhuta is speaking to King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, and he has just told the story of the pigeon family caught in a hunter's net. Now he states the lesson plainly. A householder whose mind is never calm plays in the swing between pleasure and pain, like a bird hopping about a net it cannot see. He is called pitiable because he works hard to feed his family, and sinks together with all those tied to him. Then the avadhuta turns to the human birth. It is the one life where the door to freedom stands open. A person who gets it and still clings to the house, as a bird clings to its nest, is said by the wise to have climbed to a height and fallen from it. The point is not that family is wrong. The pigeon's love was real. What brings the fall is attachment that leaves no room to look up. Sridhara Svami reads this as a warning about the rare chance of human birth. The verse asks the listener to notice where love has turned into clinging.

A man climbs a long ladder to a rooftop, reaches the open hatch to the sky, and sits on the top rung rearranging the things he carried up, until the light fades. The ladder is the human birth, the hatch is the door to freedom, and the carried things are the household he clings to.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes after the evening meal with nothing in your hands. 2. Ask yourself one question: what am I holding on to today out of worry rather than love? 3. Name one such worry aloud or on paper, and notice how it feels in the body. 4. Do one caring act for your family that asks nothing in return, and leave it there.

A mother of two sits in a parked car outside the school gates, ten minutes early, going through tomorrow's bills, the permission slips and her father's appointment. She is not in the car and not at home. Her mind is already in all the rooms. The verse speaks to her without telling her to love less. The avadhuta's image is of a bird who has stopped seeing anything but the net. In that moment, the first step would be to see that her mind has been swinging between relief and dread for an hour. The second would be to see that the care she gives is real, and that the constant worry is something added to it. The third would be to let one thing be done for now, and watch the children come out of the gate. Ordinary experience confirms that a worried mind serves the people it worries about less well. The verse does not promise that the bills shrink or that the people she loves are safe, and it is no substitute for help with money or health where help is needed.
