Many days he lay without food, making no move, if no morsel came to him, like the great serpent who eats what fate sends. His body held its vigor, its mental force and its strength, yet it did no work. He lay with sleep gone from him, and though every sense was sound, he made no effort to stir.
The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what the python taught him. Four words carry it. Nirahara means without food; ahara is what is taken in. Anupakrama means not setting out, from upakrama, to begin an undertaking. Dishta means what has been pointed out or allotted, so fate or lot. Akarmaka means not acting. The first half is plain: if food does not come, the python goes hungry for many days and does not go hunting, living on what its lot sends. The second half closes off an easy misreading. The avadhuta says the body is full of ojas, sahas and bala: the body's vigor, the mind's force and plain muscle strength. He is awake, with sleep gone, and every sense works. So his stillness is not illness, tiredness or dullness. He can act and chooses not to strain after his next meal. Sridhara and the other commentators take the python as a picture of a mind that has stopped chasing. Krishna's retelling gives the reason: the verse before this said to eat what comes, tasty or plain, and leave pleasure and pain to their own course. It asks the listener for a settled, awake, unhungry trust, with no scheming for tomorrow's pleasure.
A cat on a sunny windowsill lies loose, eyes half open, every muscle ready, going nowhere and chasing nothing. The cat is strong and alert and still. That is the avadhuta's python: stillness that comes from fullness and not from weakness.
1. Next time you are made to wait, at a bus stop, a clinic or a kitchen with dinner late, put your phone away for ten minutes. 2. Sit or stand loosely, eyes open, and notice where the body tightens to push the waiting along. Let those places soften. 3. Notice that you are awake and well even though nothing is happening. 4. When the thing arrives, take it as it comes, tasty or plain, without comment.
A man is stranded overnight at a small railway station after the monsoon cancels his train. The tea stall is shut. He paces, checks the board, snaps at the clerk, and the hunger feels worse for the pacing. Now take the python's way. He sits on the bench, drinks water from his bottle, and lets the body be tired and awake without adding a fight on top. The wait is the same length, but the strain is gone. In the morning the stall opens and he eats what is there. Ordinary experience bears this out: restlessness makes a wait feel longer than it is. The avadhuta's python lies many days without food, and that is his account, not a rule for anyone. Most healthy adults can go some hours without a meal, but days without food are unsafe for many people, such as those with diabetes, children, the old and the pregnant. The verse does not say to refuse food or help when they are offered. It promises neither that the food will come nor that waiting will not hurt. Anyone unwell should still see a doctor.
