Meaning · English

The sage is clear and deep, hard to enter and hard to cross, without end or far shore, unshaken, like the sea when its waters lie still. Whether his wishes are fulfilled or lacking, the sage who holds Narayana as his highest aim does not rise over his banks and does not dry up, as the sea does not with all the rivers that enter it.

The avadhuta tells King Yadu, in Krishna's retelling, what the sea taught him. A muni is a sage, one given to quiet thought. The sea is prasanna, clear and calm on the surface, and gambhira, deep, so its bottom cannot be seen from the shore. It is hard to enter and hard to cross. It has no end and no far bank, and when its water is still, nothing shakes it. The sage is the same: easy to meet, yet no one reaches his floor. The second half sets the test. A sage may be samriddha-kama, with every wish fulfilled, or hina, lacking. The text calls him narayana-para, one whose highest aim is Narayana, the single thing he leans on. Rivers then pour in or fail to, and he neither floods his banks nor goes dry. The commentators read the rivers as the pleasures and losses that keep flowing toward a person. The lesson sits right after the python, who eats whatever chance brings. The python shows how to take what arrives. The sea shows what stays level inside while it arrives. The avadhuta is explaining how he lives so freely: his steadiness rests on where his aim is fixed, not on how full his hands are. Nothing here asks the sage to leave the world. The rivers still enter. They simply do not set the water's level.

Pour one spoonful of water into a teacup and it spills over. Pour it into a full rain tank and the surface barely trembles. The cup is a mind whose level depends on each gain or loss; the tank is a mind with a deep anchor.

1. Tonight, write down the best and the worst thing that happened today, one line each. 2. Beside each, note how far your mood rose or fell, as a rough height on a line from low to high. 3. Ask which one you kept thinking about longer. 4. For one week, before reacting to news good or bad, take three slow breaths and name quietly what you lean on, whether prayer, family or a name of God.

A tailor has just finished the wedding season. For weeks the shop was full, orders came in daily, and he felt tall. Now the first week is slow, the bench is empty, and he catches himself pacing and snapping at his assistant, as if the quiet were a verdict on him. The verse would change that moment in steps. First he notices that the rise and the sag are both rivers, arriving and leaving on their own schedule. Then he separates the shop's level from his own: busy weeks do not make him more, quiet ones do not make him less. Then he turns to what he leans on, which the text names as Narayana, and does the next small task from there, mending the stock or calling a regular customer. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind swinging with every sale decides worse than a level one. The verse does not promise the quiet week will fill, that rent stops being due, or that worry never comes. It speaks about the water's level, not the weather upstream.
