Steadiness and Freedom
Bhagavad Gita 2.15
Meaning · English
The person whom these contacts do not torment, noblest of men, who stays level and steady in pain and in pleasure alike, becomes fit for immortality.
Three words carry the teaching. Dhira means steady, someone whose mind stays put when things move around it. Sama means level or equipoised: the same in pain and in pleasure, not high in one and low in the other. Kalpate means becomes fit, becomes eligible, which is the language of qualifying, not of being paid a prize. The goal it points to is amritatva, literally not-dying, which the glossary renders as liberation. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person whom these sense contacts do not distress, and who stays level through both distress and happiness, is eligible for liberation. He has just said these contacts come and go. Now he says what follows for the one who is not thrown by them. Arjuna is shaking with grief and wants to drop his bow, so this is the answer to his state: steadiness is what makes a person ready for something larger. Calling him noblest of men tells him he is capable of it. Shankara reads the steady person as one who has seen the self as apart from these contacts. Ramanuja reads the steadiness as coming from knowing the self to be different from the body. Madhva ties the steadiness to knowing the Lord, and sees that knowledge as what makes a person fit for liberation.
A buoy in a harbour is lifted by every swell and dropped by the next, and the water around it is never still. It does not drift off, because a chain runs from it to the sea floor. Pain and pleasure are the swells; the steady person is the buoy.
1. Pick one small irritation today, such as a delayed bus, a curt message or a cold meal. Before you react, wait ten slow breaths and watch the feeling rise and ease. 2. Do the same once with a small pleasure, such as a compliment or a sweet. Notice the pull to grab at it or to want more. 3. Tonight, write down one choice you nearly made in the heat of a mood. Ask whether you would make it the same way tomorrow.
A woman is in her kitchen, guests due in an hour, when a message arrives: the job offer has been withdrawn. Her chest tightens and her first thought is that she is a failure. Then the doorbell rings. Krishna's teaching changes the next minutes in steps. She lets the sting be there without arguing with it. She does not turn one email into a verdict on her worth. She does not decide anything big in that hour. She serves the meal, and the feeling rises, crests and slackens on its own. Later, if a friend shares happy news and she is swept up, the same level hand keeps her from promising what she cannot give. Ordinary experience bears this out: decisions made at the peak of a mood are often the ones people regret. The verse does not say she will feel nothing, and it does not replace the lost income or the loss itself. If low mood stays for weeks and starts to blunt her days, she should see a doctor, as she would for any other illness.
