The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2 · What Never Dies
What Is and Isn't Real
Bhagavad Gita 2.16
Meaning · English
The unreal has no being; the real has no ceasing. The seers of the truth have observed the final verdict on both of these.
Three words carry this. Asat means the temporary, literally what does not stay. Sat means the eternal, what simply is. Bhava is being, the standing of a thing as real, and abhava is its opposite, ceasing. Krishna tells Arjuna that what is temporary has no lasting being, and what is eternal has no ceasing. Anta means conclusion, the settled end of an inquiry, and the tattva-darshis are the seers of the truth, those who looked at both and reached the same finding. The reason follows from the verses before it. Arjuna is shaken by cold and heat, pleasure and pain, and by the thought of those about to die. Krishna answers by sorting what he fears losing into two kinds: what comes and goes, and what cannot go. Grief, he says, has been aimed at the wrong kind. The verse asks Arjuna to learn the difference by looking, as the seers did. Shankara reads sat as the one Brahman and asat as the changing world. Ramanuja reads both as real, the body and the soul, differing in whether they change. Madhva also holds the difference to be real and eternal.
A sandcastle at the tide line and the beach under it. The castle takes shape, holds for an afternoon, and is gone by evening, while the beach was there before and stays after. The castle is the passing thing that has no lasting being; the beach is what does not cease.
1. Tonight, write two short columns on paper: things that worry you and things that will still be true in ten years. 2. Next to each worry, mark whether it comes and goes, like a mood, a deadline or a bill, or whether it stays. 3. Pick the worry that came and goes. For five minutes, hold it as something passing and see whether your body loosens even slightly. 4. Notice what you listed in the second column, and who you are when you think of it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. Every thought is about what might be lost, and his hands will not stay still. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in steps. First, he would name what is in front of him: a body, a procedure, a night that will end. These come and go, and he has already seen many such things pass. Second, he would ask what in his father, and in himself, is not the kind of thing that ends, as the text teaches it. Third, grief would have somewhere to rest besides panic, so he can ask the nurse a clear question and sit with his mother. Ordinary experience confirms that fear shrinks a little when we can say exactly what it is about. The verse does not promise that his father will live, or that grief will not come. It is no substitute for the surgeon, and it does not take away the pain of a possible loss.
