Where Real Strength Lies

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.65

Meaning · English

For ascetics, strength is austerity. For those who know the Veda, strength is the Veda itself. For the wicked, strength is the urge to hurt. For the good, strength is forgiveness.

Vidura sets four kinds of people side by side and names what each one leans on. Three words carry it. Tapas comes from a root meaning heat: a discipline that burns away ease, and it is what an ascetic stands on. Hiṁsā comes from a root meaning to strike: the wish to injure, which is what the text says the wicked rely on. Kshama comes from a root meaning to bear or endure: taking a wrong without striking back. That is what the text gives the virtuous. The clauses run in order. Ascetics are strong through their austerity. Knowers of the Veda are strong through the Veda they hold. The wicked are strong through harm. The good are strong through forgiveness. None of the four is a list of rewards. Each names the thing a person reaches for when pressed. Vidura is speaking to a king who cannot sleep and who must soon decide whether to hold back or to strike. Before any act, the text points to three questions. What is being done? Who is doing it? What strength is carrying it? Vidura does not say which the king will choose. He only lays out what each path rests on.

Open a toolbox and you can tell whose it is. A plumber's holds wrenches, a gardener's holds shears. Each person reaches first for the tool they trust. In the same way, what a person grabs when pressed shows which of the four strengths they stand on.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you plan to do tomorrow, such as a hard conversation, a purchase or a reply you owe. Write one line on what the act is. 2. Beside it, write who is doing it: your calm self, your tired self or your angry self. 3. Then write what you are leaning on to do it. Notice whether it is discipline, knowledge, a wish to hurt or a willingness to forgive. 4. Spend two minutes reading the three lines before you begin.
