Answering Harm With Good

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.68

Meaning · English

Answer anger with patience. Answer the wicked with goodness. Answer the stingy with generosity, and answer a lie with the truth.

Vidura gives four pairs, and in each the fault is met by its opposite. The first key word is kshama, forgiveness. Its root sense is bearing, taking a blow without handing it back. Anger is met by that. The second is sadhuta, goodness, from sadhu, a straight and upright person. The wicked are met by plain decency, not by a wickedness that matches theirs. The third is dana, giving. The miser is met by an open hand, which is the reverse of what he grips. The fourth is satya, truth. Its root is sat, what is. A lie is met by saying what is. Each clause stands on its own, and none is softened. Vidura is speaking to a king who cannot sleep, and who has let his own son's anger and greed run the court. The advice is that fire is not put out with fire. Anger answered with anger only grows, and a lie answered with a lie leaves two lies. The remedy has to be a different thing from the fault. The reason Vidura gives is simple: each fault is beaten only by its opposite. This also suits the reading on which this verse sits. Speech that is not true is worse than silence, and truth is better than both.

A lamp carried into a dark room. The dark is not argued with or pushed out. It simply has no place where the light is. In the same way, anger, meanness and lies give way to patience, giving and truth, the plain opposite of each.

1. Today, when someone speaks sharply to you, wait three slow breaths before answering. Notice what your reply would have been. 2. Choose one small thing to give away this week, such as time, a meal or a useful item, and hand it over without comment. 3. Before bed, recall one moment you shaded the truth. Tomorrow, say the plain version aloud to the person concerned, or silently to yourself if that is not possible.
