Feeding What Never Fills
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 39.74
Meaning · English
Sleep is not finished by sleeping, nor desire for women by indulging it. Fire is not finished by more fuel, nor the thirst for wine by drinking it. Each grows on what it is given.
Vidura sets four things side by side: sleep (nidra), desire (kama), fire (agni) and wine. In each, the usual remedy is to give the thing what it asks for. The verse says that remedy does not work. The word for conquering, jaya, means to master something so that it no longer rules you. Lying down does not master sleep. Indulging desire does not master desire. Wood does not master a fire. A drink does not end the wish for the next one. Each of the four is a hunger that grows by being fed. Vidura speaks to a king who lies awake at midnight, driven by wanting. The reason he gives is simple. If you start an act to satisfy a craving, the act can leave the craving larger. So three questions come before the act. What is being done? Who is doing it, and what is moving him? Will the purpose actually be met, or only fed? Vidura does not say never to sleep or never to enjoy. He says that an appetite cannot be used to end itself, and that a person who forgets this will keep acting and keep wanting.
A fire in a grate burns low, and you add a log. It flares, warms the room briefly, and then asks for another. Each log gives the flame what it wants, and the flame is never settled. Wanting works the same way. Each thing handed to it makes it burn higher.
1. Today, pick one small habit you reach for without thinking, such as a snack, a phone, or one more episode. 2. Before you start it, wait one minute and ask three things: what am I doing, who in me is asking for it, and what do I want from it? 3. Afterward, notice whether the wish is gone or only paused. Say it to yourself in a sentence. 4. Do this once a day for a week.
