Knowledge That Divides
Bhagavad Gita 18.21
Meaning · English
The knowledge that sees, in all living beings, only many kinds of entities, each one apart and unconnected from the others, know that knowledge to be in the mode of passion.
Krishna is sorting knowledge by the three modes, and here he names the middle kind. Three words carry it. Prithaktva means apartness, the sense of things standing each on its own. Nana-bhava means the many states or kinds of being, the plain fact of diversity. Rajasa means belonging to rajas, the restless, grasping drive that keeps pulling a mind outward. The knowledge Krishna describes does not get the facts wrong. It sees that beings differ, and then stops there. Each creature is taken as a separate thing with no thread joining it to the rest. Krishna calls this passionate knowledge, and the reason sits in the verses beside it: the goodness-mode sees one undivided nature running through the many, so knowledge that sees only the many is working at a lower level. A mind that counts everyone as separate is also the mind that measures, compares and competes. The text asks the listener to notice which kind of seeing is at work. Shankara, as his reading goes, takes this to be knowledge of plurality that misses the single self in all. Ramanuja reads it as taking the souls of different beings to be different in their very nature. Madhva's tradition, as commonly taught, locates the fault in seeing beings as independent of the Lord rather than in noticing that they differ.
A hand lying on a table can be seen as five fingers, each with its own length and use, and nothing more. Someone who counts only the fingers never notices the palm they all grow from. Beings are the fingers, and the shared nature Krishna points to is the palm.
1. Pick one ordinary place today where you are among strangers: a bus, a queue, a shop. Stay there for five minutes. 2. Look at three people in turn. For each, silently note one thing you share with them, such as hunger, tiredness, a worry about money, or someone waiting at home. 3. Notice whether they feel like obstacles or like fellow travellers once you have done this. 4. Tonight, recall which person you saw most as a separate thing, and remember one detail about them.
A man stands in a packed railway compartment at ten at night, after a long day, his feet aching. Every body around him is an obstacle: the elbow, the bag, the loud phone call. Then he sees a woman holding a sleeping child upright against the sway, and a boy beside her studying a textbook by the light of a phone. The verse speaks to the moment before that, when everyone is counted as a separate thing in his way. Krishna names that way of seeing as the knowledge of passion: accurate about differences, blind to what joins them. Step by step, the verse would change the moment this way. First, he would notice that his view of the crowd is a way of seeing, not a fact about the crowd. Second, he would see that the same crowd holds tiredness, hope and effort much like his own. Third, the elbow would stay where it is, but it would belong to a person. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness narrows attention to the nearest irritation. The verse does not promise that the journey becomes shorter, that his feet stop aching, or that every stranger is kind.
