Meaning · English
Action that follows the prescribed path, is free from attachment, is done without liking or dislike, and is performed by one who does not crave its rewards is called sattvic, action in the mode of goodness.
Krishna is describing action that is clear and steady, which he calls sattvic, meaning of the mode of goodness. He gives four marks. First, the action is niyata, regulated: it follows the duty and scriptural guidance that fit the person, rather than whim. Second, it is free of sanga, attachment, the clinging that makes a person feel the work belongs to him or that he cannot be himself without it. Third, it is done without raga and dvesha, liking and aversion. The worker does not pick tasks only because they please him or dodge them because they are unpleasant. Fourth, he has no appetite for phala, the fruit, the payoff he hopes to collect. Krishna gives this as the standard by which action is judged good. The reason runs through the whole chapter: liking, dislike and craving bend the work and the worker. Take them away and what remains is the task done well. Shankara reads the regulated action as the duty belonging to one's station in life. Ramanuja reads such work as a means to knowing the self and offering it to the Lord. Madhva reads it as work offered in devotion to Vishnu. For the listener, the test is plain: why am I doing this, and what am I waiting to be paid?
A potter at the wheel who shapes a bowl because the clay is there and the bowl is needed, not because he wants praise at the market. His hands stay steady. The bowl is the work done cleanly; the praise he is not chasing is the fruit he lets go.
1. Pick one ordinary duty today, such as washing dishes, answering a message you have been avoiding, or tidying a shelf. 2. Before you begin, notice whether you feel pulled toward it or push against it. Name the feeling silently and begin anyway. 3. While you work, drop the thought of thanks or credit. Give the task your full attention for ten minutes. 4. When done, notice whether you waited for someone to see it.
A nurse finishes a double shift and has one more patient to turn. She is tired, a colleague got praised for less, and she is tempted to rush. The verse speaks to that moment. She asks first what the task needs, which is the plain duty in front of her. Then she notices the resentment and the wish for credit, and sets both down without arguing with them. Then she turns the patient with the same care as at the start of the shift. Ordinary experience confirms that work goes cleaner when attention is on the task and not on who will notice. The verse does not promise that she will feel no tiredness, that the praise will come, or that the shift will be fair. It also does not replace rest, and a person who is exhausted past safety needs sleep and help, not a better attitude. Krishna's claim is narrower: the quality of the act can be kept apart from its reward, and that is where he locates goodness.
