The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18 · What Makes an Action
Effort Driven by Craving
Bhagavad Gita 18.24
Meaning · English
Action that is driven by the wish for pleasure, or done with pride in oneself, and carried out again and again with great strain, is said to be in the nature of passion.
Krishna is describing the third kind of action, the restless kind. Three things mark it. First, kama-ipsu: karma pushed along by kama, desire, the wish to get something for oneself. Karma is simply action, and here the engine behind it is wanting. Second, ahankara, literally the 'I-maker', the sense of 'I am the one doing this, and it must be seen'. Third, bahula-ayasa, much strain: effort that wears the person out. The word punah, again, adds that this is a repeated pattern, not a single bad day. Krishna's reason is that action takes its quality from what drives it. Two people can do the same task, and the one pushed by craving and self-regard ends up tired and never settled, because each goal met only raises the next. Next to the calm action of verse 23 and the clouded action of verse 22, this is action with a hungry motor. It asks the listener to look at the motive under the work, not only at the work. Shankara and Ramanuja both take rajasa here as a description of a mode of action, not a judgment of the person. Madhva reads it the same way, as a classification within the three gunas.
A man at a wedding buffet piles his plate high, hurries back for more before he has tasted the first, and leaves exhausted and still hungry. The plate is the work, the hurry is the strain, and the appetite behind it is the craving and pride that Krishna names.
1. Pick one task today that you find tiring, such as a work report or a household chore. 2. Before starting, spend one minute asking what you want from it: praise, payment, proof, or simply the thing done. 3. Work on it for twenty minutes and notice when your shoulders tighten or you start hurrying. 4. At the end, note whether the tiredness came from the task or from the wanting. Do not judge it, just note it.
A shopkeeper opens the shutter on the morning the rent is due. He has been up since four, counting what he needs to sell, and he is also quietly set on showing his brother-in-law that the shop is doing well. Every customer feels like a test. By noon his jaw aches and he is short with a boy asking the price of a biscuit packet. The verse speaks to exactly this. It would have him see two drivers in the morning: the want of money and the want to be seen. Naming them is the first step. Then he can ask which part of the strain belongs to the rent, which is real, and which to the pride, which he can set down. Ordinary experience confirms that effort done to prove something tires a person faster than the same effort done to finish a job. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, or that the day will be easy, or that real worry will go away. If the strain is constant, with poor sleep or a racing heart, a doctor is the right person to see.
