Meaning · English

Undisciplined, vulgar, obstinate, cunning, dishonest, slothful, unhappy and morose, putting things off: a performer of action like this is said to be in the mode of ignorance.

Krishna finishes his three portraits of the doer with the darkest one. Three words carry it. Ayukta means not yoked, not joined: the mind and the work have never been harnessed together, so the person drifts. Alasa is sloth, the heaviness that will not begin. Dirgha-sutri means one who spins a long thread: every task is stretched out, always for later. Around these sit the rest of the list. Vulgar means coarse, untrained in manner. Obstinate means stiff, unwilling to bend or learn. Cunning and dishonest describe a person who gets by on tricks and crooked ways. Viṣhādī is the heavy gloom that settles over such a person. Krishna calls the whole bundle tamasa, the mode of ignorance, which is dullness and fog. The reason he gives it is the one behind the whole sequence: the quality of the doer shapes the quality of the deed, so Arjuna must see what kind of worker he is. For Arjuna, who wants to drop his bow in sorrow, this is a mirror. The verse asks him to notice when gloom and delay are passing themselves off as wisdom. Shankara reads these as marks of a mind darkened by ignorance. Ramanuja reads them as the doer ruled by the dull mode of nature, not by his own self. Madhva also takes them as qualities of that mode.

A bicycle left out in the rain for a season. The chain has rusted, the tyres have gone soft, and each time its owner passes, he says he will fix it next week. The rider has become the rust: the stiffness, the delay and the gloom are one condition.

1. Tonight, pick one task you have been putting off for days. Write it on paper in a single plain line. 2. Tomorrow morning, before checking your phone, work on it for ten minutes only. 3. Afterward, notice whether the heaviness lifted a little once you began, or whether the dread was bigger than the task. 4. If you stopped early, say so to yourself honestly and plainly, without making excuses.

A man in his forties sits on the edge of his bed at noon on a Sunday. A letter from the tax office has lain unopened on the table for three weeks. Each day he tells himself tomorrow. The delay has become its own weight, and he feels low and a little ashamed. Krishna's list names this chain: delay, heaviness, gloom, and then small evasions to cover the gap. Seeing it as the pull of tamas, a mode of dullness, and not as his true nature, lets him step back from it. He opens the letter and reads only the first page. Ordinary experience confirms that a task feared grows larger while avoided, and shrinks once it is handled. Today's family doctor would add one caution the verse does not spell out: long-lasting heaviness, loss of interest and low mood can be signs of depression or poor sleep, and need a doctor's help, not only effort. The verse does not promise that the letter will hold good news, or that the gloom will lift at once.
