Meaning · English
Hear now, Arjun, conqueror of wealth, the differences in intellect and in determination, each according to the three modes of nature, which I will lay out fully and one by one, kept distinct.
Krishna opens a new list here. He has just described the doer in three kinds. Now he turns to two inner faculties that steer the doer, and promises to give each in full and separately. Buddhi comes from a root meaning to wake or to know. It is the part of you that judges, weighs and decides what is worth doing. Dhriti comes from a root meaning to hold. It is the grip that keeps you at a task once chosen, when you are tired, afraid or tempted. Guna means a strand, like one thread twisted into a rope. Krishna says the three strands of nature, goodness, passion and ignorance, colour both faculties, so each comes in three grades. The reason for the list is practical. Arjuna is about to act, and Krishna says that action is shaped by how clearly you see and how steadily you hold. Naming the grades lets a person recognise which one is working in them now. The listener is asked to hear closely, because a distinction missed here is missed in every later choice. Shankara reads buddhi as the faculty of discernment and dhriti as the steadiness that keeps body and senses supporting a chosen aim. Ramanuja takes the classification as showing which kind of action leads toward the Lord. Madhva treats the differences among beings in these qualities as real, grounded in the Lord's ordering.
A boat on a river needs two things: someone reading the water to choose the channel, and hands that keep hold of the oar when the current pulls. A sailor with a good eye but a loose grip drifts. A strong grip with a poor eye rows hard into the shallows. Buddhi is the eye, dhriti is the grip, and the three modes decide how well each works.
1. Tonight, pick one task you did today that took effort, and ask two separate questions: did I see clearly what to do, and did I keep to it? 2. Write one line for each answer on paper, with no verdict on yourself. 3. Tomorrow, before a task you have been avoiding, name which faculty is weaker for you today, seeing or holding. Notice whether the answer changes between morning and evening.
A man in his fifties sits in a clinic corridor holding a printed diet sheet, three days after a doctor told him his blood sugar is too high. He knows the advice. Yet last night he ate the sweets his sister brought. The verse separates his trouble into two. One is judgement: does he really see what the sheet is for, and what it costs him to ignore it? The other is holding: can he keep to a plan when the evening is long and the sweets are on the table? Seen this way, he can ask which one failed last night, instead of calling himself weak. If it was judgement, he needs the reasons explained again by someone patient. If it was holding, he needs fewer sweets in the house and a fixed time for dinner. Ordinary experience bears out that tiredness and hunger loosen restraint while understanding stays intact. The verse does not promise he will keep every resolution, and it does not replace his doctor's treatment. It only gives him two clear places to look.
