Steadfast Determination in Goodness

Bhagavad Gita 18.33

Meaning · English

The determination by which a person sustains the activities of the mind, the life-airs and the senses, through Yog, with steadfastness that does not waver, is determination in the mode of goodness, Arjun, son of Pritha.

Three words carry the teaching. Dhriti means determination, from a root for holding or bearing. It is the inner grip that keeps a person upright when pulled in many directions. Yoga means joining, here the disciplined union of effort with a purpose. Avyabhicharini means not straying: it describes a faithfulness that does not wander off to some other object. Krishna tells Arjun that the determination belonging to goodness does one thing. It sustains the whole working of a person: the mind with its thoughts, the life-airs that keep the body going, and the senses with all their activity. They are held together through yoga, and the holding does not break. The reason sits in the verses around it. Krishna is sorting intellect and resolve into three kinds, and this is the best kind, the one that steadies every part of a person at once. Without it, mind and senses pull in separate directions. What it asks of Arjun, standing confused before battle, is to notice what he is holding himself together with. Shankara reads the yoga as steady concentration that keeps the mind and senses from drifting away from the Self. Ramanuja reads it as a discipline that keeps the whole person fixed on the goal of reaching the Lord. Madhva reads it as unwavering steadiness in knowing and serving Vishnu.

A tent in a high wind stays up because every rope is pulled taut and pegged to the same ground. Slack ropes flap, and one loose corner can tear the whole canvas. The ropes are mind, breath and senses. The pegs are the one steady purpose that holds them all.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as writing a letter or washing dishes, and give it ten unbroken minutes. 2. When your mind leaves, note where it went, then bring it back without scolding yourself. 3. Notice your breath and posture once or twice during the task, and see whether they settle along with your attention. 4. In the evening, recall which pull was strongest: the phone, a worry, a snack. Just name it.

A nurse reaches the last hour of a double shift. Her feet ache, a monitor beeps, a relative asks the same question a third time, and her mind runs ahead to her bed. Krishna's teaching speaks to this moment. Her mind, breath and hands are each pulling their own way, and one steady purpose, care for this patient, could gather them. Step by step it looks like this. She feels her feet on the floor and takes one slower breath. She names the one task in front of her. She does it fully, then the next. She speaks to the relative at an even pace. Ordinary experience agrees that a scattered mind makes small errors and a settled one makes fewer. The teaching does not promise she will feel rested, remove her exhaustion, or replace sleep, food or a doctor when her body needs them. It describes a way of holding herself together while the hour is hard. The text calls this holding determination in goodness. It treats that holding as something practiced, not as a mood that arrives on its own.
