Resolve Bent on Reward

Bhagavad Gita 18.34

Meaning · English

The will by which a person holds to duty, pleasure and wealth, Arjun, clinging to each out of attachment and craving its rewards, that determination, son of Pritha, belongs to the mode of passion.

Three words carry it. Dhriti is steadfast will, the inner grip that keeps a person going. Prasanga is attachment, a clinging to what one is doing. Phala-akanksha is craving for the fruit, phala being the result and akanksha the wanting of it. Krishna tells Arjuna that some people do hold firmly to dharma (duty), kama (pleasure) and artha (wealth). Their grip is real. But what drives it is attachment and hunger for returns, and Krishna names that kind of determination rajasi, of the mode of passion, the restless, wanting quality. The reason he gives is in the drive itself: the will is steady only while the reward seems near. It serves the payoff, not the work. So even duty becomes a trade. He asks Arjuna to see what is behind his own persistence before he calls it strength. Commentators: Shankara reads the three aims as the ordinary pursuits of a person bound to results. Ramanuja stresses that the fault lies in the craving, not in the pursuit. Madhva takes it as a plain classification of types of will.

A man waters a plant every morning, but only because he has been promised a prize at the garden show. He stands over it checking for buds, and when none come he stops. The watering was never for the plant. The will is the watering, and the prize is the craving that holds it up.

1. Pick one task you keep at today, such as a job, a chore or a study hour. 2. Before starting, ask yourself plainly what you are hoping to get from it, and name it in a few words. 3. Work for ten minutes while noticing how often your mind jumps ahead to the reward. 4. Afterward, note whether your effort dropped when the reward felt far away. Just notice; no need to fix anything.

A shopkeeper opens his shutters the morning the rent is due. He has held this shop for twelve years through sheer stubbornness, and today he counts the till every hour, snapping at a customer who only browses. His steadiness is real, yet it rides on the number he needs by evening. Krishna's teaching would change the moment in small steps. First he sees that his grip is tied to the reward, which explains the snapping. Then he separates what is his to do, which is open the shop, serve people well and keep honest accounts, from what is not, which is who walks in. Then he works the next hour on that, not on the till. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on an outcome gets short with people and tires faster. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, nor does it make the worry vanish. It describes where his strength is coming from, and leaves him free to ask for help, negotiate with the landlord or seek advice where he needs it.
