Gripping the Wrong Things
Bhagavad Gita 18.35
Meaning · English
The resolve by which a dull-witted person will not give up dreaming, fearing, grieving, despair and conceit: that resolve, Arjun, son of Pritha, belongs to the mode of ignorance.
Three words carry the verse. Dhriti is the power to hold on, the grip that keeps a person at a task. Durmedha means poor understanding, a mind too clouded to judge what is worth holding. Tamasi means belonging to tamas, the mode of ignorance and inertia. Krishna is finishing a list of three kinds of dhriti. The first two held something useful. This one holds on just as firmly, but to sleep, fear, grief, despair and conceit. The five are named together: dreaming, fearing, grieving, despair, and conceit. Krishna's point is that the grip is real. The person is not weak. They are stubborn about the wrong things, and they do not let go of them. The clouded mind is the reason: it cannot see that these states are not worth keeping. The verse asks the listener to notice what their own grip is closed around. Among the commentators, Shankara reads dreaming as sleep, so the verse describes holding on to heaviness and dullness. Ramanuja and Madhva take the verse as a plain description of the tamasic type, firm in the wrong place, with no change of teaching.
A child pulls the blanket over her head while the alarm rings. Her grip on the edge is tight, and nobody could easily pry it loose. The strength is real, but it is spent on staying under. The blanket is fear, grief or conceit, and the grip is the hold the verse names.
1. Tonight, before sleep, name one thing you held onto today that did you no good: a worry, a grudge, a bit of pride. 2. Write it on a scrap of paper in one plain sentence. 3. Ask whether holding it tighter would change anything by morning. If not, fold the paper and put it in a drawer. 4. Next morning, notice for one minute whether the grip has loosened. Do not force it.
A woman's shop has closed after eleven years. It is noon, the curtains are still drawn, and she is replaying the last bad month for the fortieth time. She is not lazy. She is working hard at the replaying. The verse speaks to this: Krishna calls the grip tamasic when it fastens onto fear, grief, despair and wounded pride. First, she could see that she is holding something, and that it has not been handed to her. Then she could see that the holding takes effort and returns nothing. Then she could put that same effort into one small act, such as opening the curtains, eating, or calling her sister. Ordinary experience confirms that a worry turned over for hours rarely gets smaller. The verse does not promise that the grief will lift or that the loss will shrink. Grief after a real loss is not a fault. If the heaviness lasts for weeks, or sleep and appetite fall apart, a doctor is the right person to see, and the verse does not stand in for one.
